Town of Kerrobert Culture & Recreation Newsletter Email: [email protected] Website: www.kerrobertsk.com Phone: (306)834-2344 Office—Kerrobert Courthouse 433 Manitoba Ave News from the Mayor for Sept 2017 Hopefully everyone was able to fill their days with fun and relaxation while summer lasted. The days are going by way too fast. The pool has been closed down, harvest has gone into full swing and the kids are back at school. Soon the Arena will be brought to life with many exciting games to fill the winter months. It was a very good summer for the pool and with the additions to the pool side park in- cluding playground equipment and the new shelter, made it available for everyone to enjoy. I have talked to people from other towns that are quite envious of the shelter and it is fantastic to see families and groups utilizing it. We had great weather for most of the summer which helped bring numbers up for usage of the pool. Thanks to all of the staff and outside help that kept it running so smoothly. We will be continuing on with grass cutting, street sweeping and pothole repairs. As far as the street repairs that have been done, we are pretty happy with the results of some of the different styles of road repairs and we know ways we can improve upon certain standards going forward. This was our first crack at grinding and relaying and with the improvements we already know we can make, I can see that as a process we will utilize in the future. We have had all of our staff both inside and outside taking on more re- sponsibility, especially over the last few months and Council and myself wish to thank you all for the effort that has been put forward. A great deal of work was accomplished and it is greatly appreciated. News from the Mayor August was a bad month as far as break and enters including vehicle theft. There have been several arrests made and possibly more to come. There was a great deal of stolen items recovered and in many cases already returned to the owners of the property. With the continued downturn in the economy, it brings desperation when jobs are lost and the money isn’t coming in. I feel bad but turning to stealing other people’s property is- n’t the answer. We need to watch out for each other in our community, so if you see suspicious activity, don’t hesitate to call the RCMP. I was just at a West Central meeting on August 24th and every community is seeing the same things just at different levels. It was noticed that businesses seem to be getting targeted now more than residential which was a complete reversal of just a few years ago. Do what you can to lock your homes and vehicles. You may or may not prevent the crime, but thieves look for easy targets so do what you can to deter them. If they feel it will take too much time they will move on. November 1, 2017 is the date set for the new convenience store / food outlet being built by Prairie Moon across the highway from the Hospital to be opened. Things look to be progressing very well over there. Work is under way for the new co-op card lock as well out by the 4 corners west of town. We do not have a date yet for when they feel that will be opened but again things are moving right along. Lastly, I made an error in the July Newsletter regarding Jim Veronelly’s years of service with the housing authority. I thought he had served 30 years but I guess he is at 27 years. I think the only solution is for Jim to stay on for 3 more years. Thanks Jim ! Watch the newsletter for more information. Notice of Utility Rate Increase You will notice that the next utility bill includes a $5 increase to the sewer rate. This is necessary to finance the debt incurred to construct the new sewage treatment plant lo- cated adjacent to the lagoon. Currently, our permit to operate the lagoon (issued by the Water Security Agency) only allows for spring and fall releases. The lagoon has exceeded its capacity and overflowed on a few occasions, causing environmental regulation concerns. The purpose of the treatment plant is to disinfect sewage so that it can be released into nature more quickly. Soon the new system will be operational and because sewage will be disinfected, we will be permitted to release water continuously rather than being confined to the spring and fall schedule. Water Restriction Effective July 12, 2017 Due to high water usage, we are asking for your immediate cooperation in reducing the amount of water being used inside and outside your homes and business until further notice. To prevent an impact on emergency services, we are asking residents to adhere to an odd/even watering system: Homes with odd-numbered civic addresses can water on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Homes with even-numbered civic addresses can water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. If you choose to water your lawn and/or garden, watering is only permitted between the hours of 7:00 pm until 8:00 am. Watering is NOT permitted on Sundays.
