Wilson Spotlight Issue 354 October 8, 2012 http://www.pps.k12.or.us/schools/wilson/ FOOTBALL TEAM GOES PINK ON OCTOBER 11 To help shine a light on Cancer Awareness month, the Wilson football teams will be sporting pink for our last regular-season home game, Thursday, Oct 11th. All of our three teams will have pink socks and pink wrap... and look for the pink ribbon painted on the field. “We just want to show support for a great cause,” adds Coach Ken Duilio. “Cancer Awareness month hopefully brings more attention to a disease that affects all of us. We will wear pink with pride!” WILSON STUDENTS KEEP BLOCK PRINTING ART ALIVE THANKS TO CHARLES F SURENDORF II ART FOUNDATION Marie Pearson, Wilson Art Teacher is thrilled to announce that Cindy Surendorf is doing a two-week block printing workshop in the Draw-Paint-Print classes at Wilson. Cindy is the Executive Director of the Charles F Surendorf II Art Foundation. Her father is Charles Surendorf, a WPA artist during the Great Depression and was among the top block print artists of the 20th century. Cindy uses her father's work to discuss societal issues (such as racism, poverty, and heath) that were present during the Great Depression and how many of these problems are still present today. Students choose a contemporary problem and create a block print that presents a solution. Her foundation provides all of the supplies for the workshop. There is no cost to the school. The workshop is scheduled for October 1 through October15 for the four sections of Draw-Paint-Print. Here is a link to the Charles F Surendorf II Art Foundation website: http://www.surendorf2artfoundation.org/. Thank you Ms. Surendorf! The common denominator? WILSON!!! The 2nd Annual House Parties are expecting some very special guests this year. Make sure that youʼre one of them! RSVP to [email protected] – we need to know (asap) whoʼs joining in the fun so our wonderful hosts are able to prepare a special evening. See you there! All of the parties are fundraisers – no cost to join the party, but bring your checkbook to make a donation. CANʼT MAKE IT TO THE FOUNDATIONʼS HOUSE PARTIES? Bummer; youʼll be missed. Even though you wonʼt be able to mingle THIS time, your financial support is extremely important to Wilsonʼs success. Please show your support of Wilson by donating to Foundation. Foundation is the only way to pay for additional staff, thus increasing course offerings while decreasing class sizes. Mail a check to Wilson designated for Foundation, or donate online at www.allhandsraised.org; be sure to designate Wilson as the recipient. And please be sure to check with your employer, as many match employee donations - thus doubling your money. Because of last yearʼs contributions, this yearʼs students are enjoying smaller core classes and have the opportunity to take wood/metal shop, architecture/drafting, and graphic media design. Thank you for your support! DESPERATELY SEEKING INSTRUMENTALISTS! Wilson Drama is already hard at work on this seasonʼs musical offering, Leonard Bernsteinʼs On The Town. Weʼve got the cast, weʼve got the crew, what we donʼt have are the talented instrumentalists to bring it home. Do you play? If so, we want you! Weʼre looking for people to fill the following roles in our orchestra: Oboe (1) Clarinets (3) French Horns (2) Trumpets (3) Violins (2) Viola (1) Cello (1) Upright Bass (1) Contact WHS Band Director Nick Caldwell, [email protected] for more information. The City of Portlandʼs Future Connect Challenge is raising the stakes with a prize for school that has the highest participation rate. Beginning October 5, Portland high school students will have a chance to get a head start on planning for college – and show off their school spirit at the same time. By participating in the Future Connect Challenge, students help their school win. The school with the highest participation rate will win an after school Movie and Pizza Party! All students who participated in the Challenge will watch a movie and be treated to pizza, courtesy of Dominos Pizza on NE Glisan and 69th Ave. Teachers and staff can help by encouraging students to complete each step, announcing the Challenge in assemblies and in class, or offering incentives like extra credit–whatever you know works to get your students motivated! The high school with the highest Future Connect Challenge participation rate will be awarded a pizza/movie party provided by the City of Portlandʼs Future Connect Initiative. Contest Rules and Details: (a) The winning school will be decided by averaging the participation rate from each week. (b) The participation rate is determined by dividing the amount of students who participate in each weekʼs steps by the total number of students who are enrolled into the school. (c) The average will be calculated by adding each weekly participation rate and dividing the total by the number of weeks the competition occurred. (d) Schools will have until winter break to redeem their party.
