Erickson, Abraham M. Denmark, and Gabriel Collins Once China gains experience with its first aircraft carrier, the most important question will concern not the number and capabilities of Chinese carriers but how they will be employed. Beijing could use them to inaugurate a new era of cooperation—or to challenge the fundamental openness and stability of the international system. The Republic of Korea’s Counter-asymmetric Strategy Lessons from ROKS Cheonan and Yeonpyeong Island . 55 Captain Duk-Ki Kim, Republic of Korea Navy The sinking of ROKS Cheonan and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island must mark a turning point in the defense of the Republic of Korea. The incidents show that the North is turning to asymmetric means to exploit weakness; the South requires counter-asymmetric strategies to deter and defeat them. Seeking Balance Force Projection, Confidence Building, and the Republic of Singapore Navy . 75 Swee Lean Collin Koh In a few decades the reach of the Republic of Singapore Navy has grown from nearby waters to the entire critical Strait of Malacca zone, with visits and operations far beyond. How has it developed, and what are its purposes? Operational Art The Port Moresby–Solomons Operation and the Allied Reaction, 27 April–11 May 1942 . 93 Milan Vego The May 1942 carrier battle in the Coral Sea is famous, but the major Japanese operation that brought it about is less familiar. Recently translated Japanese archival sources help put the engagement in its proper context and highlight the lessons it offers for the operational level of war.
