Processional Hymn 330 O Praise Ye the Lord - Laudate Dominum The Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria Woodlands Glory to God, we give you thanks and praise; of heavenly joy and earthly peace we sing, We worship you, to you our hearts we raise, Lord God, Almighty Father, heavenly King. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father's only Son, you bore for us the load of this world's sin. O Lamb of God, your glorious victory won, receive our prayer, grant us your peace within. Alone, O Christ, you only are the Lord, at God's right hand, in majesty most high: who, with the Spirit worshiped and adored, with all the heavenly host we glorify. The Collect Eternal God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals. Grant that as your holy angels stand before you in heaven, so at your command they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Congregation is seated The Proclamation of the Word The First Lesson A reading from Genesis Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!’ And he was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’ Genesis 28:10-17 Hear how the Spirit speaks to the Church. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn 535 As Jacob with Travel was Weary - Jacob’s Ladder All stand The Gospel The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’ John 1:47-51 The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Sermon The Rev. Dr. Terry Hidichuk The Summary of the Law Hear the teaching of Christ: you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And a second is this: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Sunday School Litany responses Adoration: Let’s praise God together by saying “God, you’re so amazing!” Thanksgiving: Let’s thank God together by saying “O God, we thank you.” Petition: Let’s bring our requests to God together by saying “God, hear our prayer.” Confession and Absolution God our Creator gives us our hands to do good with. But when we use them to do wrong, he is ready to forgive us, and help us to do better. Let us look at our hands for a moment, and think how we do use them, and how we might use them for good. Let us ask God to forgive us for using our hands to be unfair to others or to hurt them, to hold things to ourselves instead of sharing your gifts, to cover our mouths instead of speaking in love. God, I am looking at my hands. Help me to see them as you do. Forgive me for when I do not use them in the way that you made them to be used. When I am angry, help me not to hurt. When I am frightened, help me to reach out for help. When I am tempted to be greedy, help me to be generous instead. Lord, teach me to use my hands to do good in your world. Amen. Let us wash our hands together, to symbolise God's forgiveness. bowls of water and towels are passed through the congregation When all have washed their hands, the Celebrant says Loving God, we come to you with all our potential but having made mistakes, having done wrong in what we do and what we hold back from doing. You wipe clean our hands and show us that we can start fresh. Your gentle words forgive us when we do wrong. Let us learn from you so that we can forgive those who hurt, betray, or ignore us. Holy God, we come before you ready for a new start. Help us to accept your forgiveness and to rejoice in your everlasting mercy. Fill our hands with your love, so that we can pass it on to the whole world. We ask all this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. The Peace Blessed are the Peacemakers. They shall be called children of God. We meet in the name of Christ to share his peace. The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
