Care is required on the final short steep ascent. ESCAPE ROUTE 1 - Exits from a Stoneycroft 2° 2.2 4.2 Exit down a well defined col (A) between Causey Pike and (Stair). Grid Ref: path to your right Sail [Exits from 204205] 232214 (bearing = 2°) on a col just BEFORE the very obvious zig-zag path (17 bends) going up to Sail. Head down the valley via Stoneycroft Gill returning to Stair near Braithwaite in a generally NE then E direction. Causey Pike [219209] (1 in 10) Sail 310° 1.6 3.6 Easy walking via Scar Crags and then up the very obvious zig-zag path (17 bends). As the path levels out, the summit is 10m to the right of the path with a small cairn on top. Continue along path towards Crag Hill. Sail [198203] (2 in 10) Crag Hill 274° 0.4 4.0 Well defined path up to Crag Hill via The Scar. Crag Hill has a Trig point on the summit. ESCAPE ROUTE 2 - Exits from a Lanthwaite 230° 2.9 6.9 Head down main path col (A) approx. 0.5 mile SW Green Farm. from Crag Hill (bearing = beyond summit of Crag Hill [Exits Grid Ref: 159208 230°) then exit on the col from 186202 - indicated on OS (approx. 1/2 mile beyond map with a height ref of 722m] summit) by turning right (bearing = 8°) off the main path along another well defined path. Do NOT continue straight ahead up to Grasmoor! Route goes via Gasgale Gill to Lanthwaite Green Farm in a generally N then W direction. Crag Hill [193204] (3 in 10) Wandope 230° 0.6 4.6 Descend from Crag Hill on the main path, for a distance of approx. 150m then continue down a (less obvious) narrow path on the left. You should be walking around the top lip of a steep bowl on your left hand side. Gradually descend via this path in a generally S direction before the gentle ascent to Wandope. Wandope [188197] (4 in 10) Whiteless Pike 270° 0.8 5.4 Easy descending path via Whiteless Edge. Whiteless Pike [180190] (5 in 10) BUTTERMERE 240° 1.7 7.1 Descend along easy paths. Continue up Pass for approx. 1/4 mile, then take footpath on right (bearing = 75°). For the summit, at the top of steep ascent, turn right (bearing = 190°). High Snockrigg [187169] (6 in 10) Robinson 95° 1.1 9.5 Very boggy and wet on Buttermere Moss (just below High Snockrigg)! Once over this, follow obvious path up to Robinson. Robinson [202169] (7 in 10) Dale Head 205° 1.9 11.4 Good path via Littledale Edge and Hindsgarth Edge. >>TARGET TIME TO DALE HEAD UNDER 7 hrs 00 mins<< ESCAPE ROUTE 3 - Exits from top Honister Hause 170° 1.1 12.5 Head down a well of Dale Head [Exits from 223153] (YHA and defined path to the top Honister of Honister Pass (YHA, Mines). Grid Honister Slate Mines) in Ref: 225135 a generally S direction. Dale Head [223153] (8 in 10) High Spy 80° 1.4 12.8 Via Dalehead Tarn. From Tarn, find path over wall (bearing approx. 50°) to head up clear path to High Spy (with a large cairn on summit). High Spy [234162] (9 in 10) Maiden Moor 14° 1.4 14.2 Clear well defined path along tops. NOTE: Approx. 1 mile after High Spy summit the path forks; be sure to take the left hand fork (bearing = 355°), with the fell edge on your immediate left (NOT the right hand path with a bearing of 38°) to get to summit of Maiden Moor. Maiden Moor [237182] (10 in 10) FINISH - 44° 3.0 17.2 Descend into Newlands Swinside Inn Valley off the col before the final ascent to Catbells. Follow good paths to Skelgill. At farm, turn left through the gate then along lanes to return to the Inn. Above information to be used as a guide only. Col = the 'dip' or saddle between two higher points/peaks.
