He had been writing mostly radio drama (which he greatly disliked) and had eight or nine commercially unsuccessful plays when he began writing All My Sons. Miller turned down an offer to work as a scriptwriter in 1938 for Twentieth Century Fox to pursue playwriting for the Federal Theater Project in New York City. Several of his works did have positive critical response- he received a Hopwood Award in Drama in 1936 for No Villain and in 1937 for Honors at Dawn and in 1944 he received the Theater Guild National Award for The Man Who Had All the Luck. All My Sons was loosely based on a true story of a daughter who turned in her father for producing defective bombs during World War II. It incorporates Miller's admitted Marxist feelings about the war, and the character Larry is based partially on his own brother, Kermit. There was a popular controversy over the viability of the plot after it premiered, but it was put to rest after a scandal erupted regarding an Ohio arms factory at which defective weapons were shipped despite safety precautions. ,. Miller's intent was for All My Sons to be performed during the war, but because it took two years l to finish (and involved an additional 700 pages of discarded dialogue), the premiere was not until January 29, 1947, well after the end of World War II. At the time, the play was Miller's self-professed last attempt at stage drama if it failed commercially. His intention was to write an "un-theatrical" and "lbsen-esque" work that reflected his political beliefs at the time. His agent, Kay Broen, introduced him to Elia Kazan as a director (who also later worked with Tennessee Williams). Kazan's push for the play to be produced and demands on the actors combined with Brooks Atkins' promotions led to the success of the play's first production. The original production had a long and successful run, winning a Drama WEARE Critics' Circle Award.
