During the July school holidays Orokonui Ecosanctuary ran a competition aimed at children, giving them the opportunity to name the first kaka chick to be born in the wild in east Otago since the 1920’s at the Ecosanctuary. The competition was created to increase the awareness of Orokonui Ecosanctuary and herald what can only be described as the ultimate outcome for staff and supporters. With near to 200 entries, staff were thrilled with the great ideas that flooded in. Phyllis Smith kindly offered to help by judging the competition which she admitted was not an easy task. Robert Spratt was the winner of the family pass for a guided tour at Orokonui by suggesting the name Matariki which Phyllis thought was perfectly fitting for our new addition and beginning at Orokonui Ecosanctuary. Upoko on Road to Recovery. In May, David Ellison underwent surgery, we can report that David is at home recovering and should be out and about soon. We started the month with a very productive te reo hui and an informal and entertaining night around a bonfire on Huriawa. The night was in honour of the approaching arrivals of Puaka and Matariki. It is the third year we have taken our Puaka Matariki celebration onto Huriawa and it still feels like a very special way to mark this time on the Maori calendar. Perhaps it is the combination of the biting cold, the clear night sky and the excitement of the children toasting marshmallows around the bonfire. Maybe it is the waiata and impromptu story telling, with sound effects, shivering & laughing together or maybe we’re all a bit crazy, but looks like we’ll be there again next year. In contrast the atmosphere for the inaugural Puketeraki Wearable Arts Show was positively balmy, no doubt helped by the full house audience. It was another first for the marae and one that will, in all probability, be repeated next year. Check out the photos and article in the newsletter or go on-line to the runaka website to view some photos. www.puketeraki.co.nz . Interspersed between the Runaka events were a range of activities and events happening around Dunedin. The calendar of Puaka Matariki events seems to be growing locally with increasing participation and audiences. Unfortunately Oi won’t be back next year with another season of performances and short films to tease, please and unease however we look forward to whatever Kelly & Rihari cook up next. It is sure to be creative, professionally produced and well marketed. Ka mihi mahana ki a korua. At the marae we have been very conscious of the spread of germs, particularly this winter, so we have increased the access to hand sanitisers around the marae and also ask those with colds to shake hands rather than hongi. The next month is traditionally a quiet time for school visits and the worst of the pandemic may have passed by the time school groups start to return to the marae in mid-August. We hope you keep warm & well for the remainder of winter and that we all enjoy an early arrival of spring. Na Suzanne Ellison, Runaka Manager He Pepi Congratulations to Michael Stevens and Emma Wyeth on the birth of their son, Kura-mātakitaki William Isaac Stevens, who was born on 12 June 2009 weighing in at 7lb 11oz. Kura is the first moko for the Metzger, Stevens and Wyeth whanau. Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki 121 Grimness Street, Karitane 9471. This was by far the biggest we have had and also one of the best. There were lots of activities for all tamariki including kapa haka, mahi toi, swimming, day trip to Moeraki marae where they were told stories of the area, had lunch, a walk along the beach to the boulders then we called into Shag Point on the way home to look for penguins and seals. Thank you, to Koa Mantell, Rachele Tiopira, Mat Ellison and Jim Fyfe for a great day. Thanks to Toni Pelasio from the Dunedin police for coming out on the first day to talk about what it is like to be a police officer. Also thanks to Tumai Ora Whanau Services for their mahi and Kati Huirapa Runaka for the use of the marae, last but not least Big Loves go out to all my helpers without them all these programmes could not be run. Whanau really appreciate the very reasonable cost of attending the tamariki programme this is only possible because of the financial support of the Runaka, local businesses, and individual members. The principal aim is the retention of the ancestral land. In 2007 the owners committed to seek funding in order to produce a DVD recording Maori associations with the Purakaunui District, back to the earliest known times. This will feature interviews with archaeologists, a historian with extensive knowledge of the Whare Ake Ake story, plus interviews with descendants of the tipuna. Bill Dacker and John Irwin have been contracted to produce the end product, which will then be available to runaka, schools, libraries, and whanau. Funding has been successful, and the balance required is currently being sought. It is hoped that the project will be concluded by about the end of the year. In February some 60 persons gathered for on site filming, concluding with a hui at Puketeraki Marae on the Sunday. It was indeed a great honour and privilege that Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan, her brother Kukupa Tirikatene and his wife Heather were able to be with us and also play a significant part in the proceedings. The Tirikatene family descend from Emma Paerata (1841-1877) the second daughter to be born to Richard Driver and Motoitoi. The choice of Puketeraki Marae as a location, was something of a homecoming for some in attendance. In as much as tipuna of the Millers, the Warrens, and possibly others, had been baptised and/or married by Ministers at the former Wesleyan Mission in the 1850's. The Management Committee were most appreciative and grateful that the Marae was available to conclude what all described as a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. Outside the night sky was clear and twinkling, inside the wharenui special lighting effects shimmered and sparkled across the ceiling and walls. Back stage there was even more glitter and sparkles on the costumes and on the models but even more noticeable was the sense of excitement that pervaded the marae. People arrived early for the sell out show and the whare was full well before the house lights went down. For some people this was their first visit to the marae and leaving their shoes on the porch, especially on such a chilly night added to the sense that they were there for something special. The wharenui was transformed into a funky, throbbing fashion set which promised a night unlike any other.
