Position Focus: The Ivy Plus Libraries (Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, and Yale), comprising some of the greatest library collections in the world, seek an experienced, enthusiastic, and imaginative leader to plan, implement, and oversee new collaborative collections initiatives which will further integrate the vast riches of our collective collection while also expanding the breadth and depth of resources available, in any format and for scholars of today and tomorrow. The Director of Collections Initiatives serves as the principal planner, project manager, and negotiator for initiatives that promise substantial positive impacts in the development, management, and use of collections in any format. Although this senior-level position reports to the Yale’s University Librarian, it is the Ivy Plus Collection Development Group, especially its Executive Committee, which will partner with and guide the Director of Collections Initiatives to develop, implement, and assess efforts ranging from shared print storage capability to digital preservation, drawing on the unparalleled strengths of both the staff and the collections of the Ivy Plus institutions. The Director of Collections Initiatives assists or leads program planning, project management, and coordination of key collaborative initiatives. This position requires an experienced collections specialist who understands the contemporary research collections landscape in all of its complexity and whose leadership style is at once deft, decisive, and diplomatic. There is the potential to work remotely, if operational needs allow. Travel will be required, and may include some overnight trips. This full-time position has an initial three-year appointment, with continuation possible. Principal Responsibilities: • In conjunction with the Ivy Plus Collection Development Group and the Ivy Plus University Librarians, develops and coordinates implementation of projects defined by the group. The level of direct oversight may vary by project. • Negotiates contracts and agreements for shared electronic information resources, shared services, and other relevant initiatives. Coordinates decision-making among member institutions, as well as NERL and other purchasing/licensing cooperatives, for purchases/licenses as needed. • Using existing (e.g., Penn Data Farm/MetriDoc) and new tools, tracks usage of the collective collection, project costs or costs savings, and other relevant metrics. Analyzes patterns, and reports trends to the Ivy Plus Collection Development Group. Develops and presents recommendations based on analyses. • Participates on the Ivy Plus Collection Development Group and Executive Committee (ex- officio) and represents the group’s interests and perspectives to third parties as appropriate. • Leads or assists in the identification of, application for, and the management of grants to support collaborative work. • Communicates effectively with University Librarians, senior administrators, and librarians at member institutions, peer institutions and consortia nationally, as well as with the vendor community. • Monitors issues, trends and best practices in collection development and management, particularly on a consortial level, contributes to that dialogue on behalf of the partnership and makes recommendations. Required Education, Skills and Experience: • Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school or a post- graduate degree in a related field and ten years of progressively responsible experience, five of which should be in a leadership role in an academic or research library or similar institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Demonstrably successful collection development and management experience in a research library, library consortium, or information resource vendor environment. • Knowledge of contemporary practices and trends for managing collections of all kinds in research libraries. • Awareness of major trends in higher education, scholarship, and research libraries. • Demonstrated aptitude for project management, and team leadership of individuals and groups with direct responsibility for program development and project management. Significant experience in developing collections involving multi-national sources. Familiarity with global information trade. • Experience with the acquisition and/or management of library information resources. A record of active professional engagement including professional presentations and publication. • Data analysis skills, including the ability to organize, present, and analyze financial and usage data. • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an organizationally complex and culturally diverse higher education setting. Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Strong influencing skills. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively to develop productive partnerships within/across organizations. Effective ability in developing innovative processes and solutions with a team-based approach. Demonstrated leadership ability on a national scale. Preferred Education, Skills and Experience: Formal project management training. Financial management experience. Grant development and management experience. A second master’s degree or Ph.D. in any discipline.
