Uniformly Continuous Partitions of Unity on a Metric Space

In this paper, we construct, for any open cover of a metric space, a partition of unity consisting of a family of uniformly continuous functions. It is a well-known characterization of paracompact spaces that every open covering admits a partition of unity subordinate to it. In a series of lectures on "Non-Linear Analysis on Banach Spaces" given at both Dalhousie University and Cleveland State University, K. Sundaresan posed the following question: If (X, d) is a metric space, may one select this partition of unity to consist of uniformly continuous functions? In this note we provide an affirmative answer to this question. THEOREM. Let X be a paracompact space in which each open set is the support of a Lipschitz continuous function. Then there is a Lipschitz continuous partition of unity subordinate to any open cover of X. Proof. Let X be a space which satisfies the hypotheses and let °U be an open cover of X. Since X is paracompact, °U admits an open refinement that is both o--discrete and locally finite; denote this refinement by Unez+ °ttn> where each %n is a discrete family of open sets. Let Sn = UAG^^- We may select a gn : X —» [0,1] to be a Lipschitz continuous function with support Sn. For / e Z+, define k, : [0,1]-> [0,1] by fc(jc)f/-x if x e [0,1//] J 11 otherwise, and define gnj : X —» [0, 1] by g„,y(x) = ^.(gn(x)). Being the composition of Lipschitz continuous functions, gnJ is itself Lipschitz continuous. Being the product of finitely many bounded Lipschitz continuous functions, hn is Lipschitz continuous. For A e °Un, define hnA :X—» [0,1] by Un(x), if xeA nnA(x)=< [0 otherwise. It is evident that hnA is Lipschitz continuous. CLAIM. 9if = {hnjA | n G Z+, A G %n} is the desired partition of unity. Proof, (i) Support (hn>A)-AG%n, so HC is subordinate to %. (ii) Since {Support (hn,A):neZ+,Ae°Un} = Unez+ °^n and since UnSz+ ^n is locally finite, df€ is a locally finite family of functions, (iii) The following identity may be proved by induction: 1 hk(x)=l-fl(l-gik,k(x)l k=l k=l Clearly, Z{hn,AU) I neZ+, A G%n} = £neZ+ KMl therefore it will suffice to show that for every xeX, there is some keZ+ such that gik>ik(x) = 1. Since Unez+ °ttn is a cover of X, for some neZ+ and A G %n, xeA. Thus, gn(x) > 0 and for some jeZ+, gn(x)>l//; i.e., gnj(x) = l. But T is a bijection, so for some keZ+, gikik(x) = l. COROLLARY. There is a uniformly continuous partition of unity subordinate to any open cover of a metric space. Proof. Let (X, d) be a metric space and U an open subset. For x e X, define fv(x) = d(x,X\U). fv is Lipschitz continuous and Support (fv) = U. Furthermore, Lipschitz con­ tinuity implies uniform continuity. REMARK. The condition that every open set be the support of a uniformly continuous functions is not a necessary condition for a space to satisfy the conclusion of the corollary.
