Short papers and discussion of earlier papers are invited. Contributions must be original. Review papers are also invited, but it is suggested that authors contemplating sub mitting these should at an early stage get in touch with the editorial board to discuss content, suitability and date of publication. Invited reviews are also published. INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTRIBUTORS Detailed instructions for contributors are published in the Scottish Journal of Geology Volume 12, Part 2, pp. 167-174. Intending authors are strongly recommended to ensure that the format of their contributions complies with these instructions as this will enable processing of their contributions with the minimum possible delay. Copies of the instructions can be obtained by writing to the Editor, Scottish Journal of Geology, 33 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh EH7 5JX. ABBREVIATION OF TITLES OF PERIODICALS Abbreviations of periodical titles in contributors' references should now conform to die British and International Standard described in BS 4148: The abbreviation of titles of periodicals; Part 1. Principles (1970); Part 2. Word-abbreviation list (1975), published by the British Standards Institution. This specification replaces the old World List of Scientific Periodicals and its sequels. The particular capitalisation and punctuation rules adopted for the Scottish Journal of Geology are: (1) the first letter of each element of the title abbreviation is capitalised, (2) the remainder of each element is printed in lower case, (3) a full stop and a space are required after all word abbreviations, and (4) the periodical tide is italicised. A few examples illustrate the change in specification: World List BS 4148 Bull. Am. Ass. Petrol. Geol. Bull. Am. Assoc. Pet. Geol. Bull. geol. Soc. Am. Bull. Geol. Soc. Am. Geophys.J. R. astr. Soc. Apart from these modifications, references should be compiled in accordance with the previously published instructions (see above).
