COMMUNICATIONS: 9.1 Matters for Routine: 9.1.1 Copy of Report No. DAS-2010-0011, for the consideration of Council on February 8, 2010, Re: Georgina Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee Membership and Terms of Reference. Moved by Brian Schouten Seconded by Cathy Tustin THAT ITEM 9.1.1 BE RECEIVED FOR INFORMATION. Carried…. 9.2 Matters for Disposition: 9.2.1 GEDAC Poster Contest Ad GEDAC 3 2010-February-10 Councillor Dave Szollosy, Chair, explained to the new members that the purpose of the poster contest is to bring awareness to the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Mr. Gary Eustace, Member, advised that there are a number of poster contests within the school system and he hopes the students with submit entries. Ms. Karen Mell, Member, advised that Sutton Public School will be holding a presentation regarding South Africa and will combine the poster contest with that event. The Members reviewed and amended the draft Poster Contest Ad. They agreed that a separate category be created for Grades 7 to 8, and that the prize amount for the Adult category be reduced to $50.00. Carried…. 9.2.2 Family Fishing Day 2010 Event The Members agreed to proceed with planning the Family Fishing Day event and making the venue work. The Committee Secretary was requested to confirm that Sibbald’s Point Provincial Park will host the event, and to schedule a meeting with the sub-committee to begin planning the event. Moved by Gord Wallace Seconded by Courtney VanDerGulik THAT ITEM 9.2.2 BE RECEIVED. 9.2.3 Peace Tree Day Mayor Robert Grossi suggested that Council endorse June 1st as Peace Tree Day in Georgina and suggested the School Board representatives request that the Boards also endorse the day. GEDAC 4 2010-February-10 Moved by Robert Grossi Seconded by Karen Mell THAT ITEM 9.2.3 BE RECEIVED AND THAT THE GEORGINA EQUITY AND DIVERSITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE RECOMMEND THAT COUNCIL ENDORSE JUNE 1ST AS PEACE TREE DAY THROUGHOUT THE TOWN OF GEORGINA, AND INVITE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND STUDENTS TO DECORATE THE TOWN OF GEORGINA TREE AND ENCOURAGE OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND BUSINESSES IN THE COMMUNITY TO DO THE SAME. Carried…. 9.2.4 Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism Councillor Dave Szollosy, Chair, requested that the Award be included on the Work Plan so members can be reminded to look for a person to nominate throughout the year. Ms. Karen Mell, Member suggested that the Award be advertised on the Town Page and be included with the volunteer recognition awards. 10. STAFF/COMMITTEE REPORTS: 10.1 Memorandum from Lisa Lyons, Committee Secretary, February 8, 2010, concerning “Enhancing the Role of Municipalities Against Racism”. Ms. Lisa Lyons, Committee Secretary, provided a verbal update concerning the “Enhancing the Role of Municipalities Against Racism” round table discussions she attended on January 28, 2010. The Members agreed to commence working on an Action Plan for the Town of Georgina, and requested that Commitment No. 1 be included on the next Agenda. The Committee Secretary advised that she would provide the Members with a list of Awards that are presented by the City of Toronto and will obtain Action Plans from other municipalities. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: 11.1 Work Plan The Members agreed to discuss organizing a bus to take community members to the Markham festival once a date has been confirmed. Ms. Karen Mell, Member, requested that Black History Month be included on the Work Plan for future planning purposes. 12. OTHER BUSINESS: None. 11.
