June 2019 Plenary 09:00 - 10:00 Room 1: Plenary Room Plenary 1 - Beyond Healthcare to health The nursing and midwifery health work force comprise almost 50% of the world’s healthcare providers globally, yet we face severe shortfalls in an aging population. We must move from systems that are focused on disease to systems that place the person at the centre of care. Nurses are expert at being able to provide person-centred and innovative care delivery, while turning policy into practice and keeping safety at the forefront. Nurses are key stakeholders in implementing and achieving real change. We wear many hats and have many roles in the provision of healthcare, some shared by other professions, but nursing is UNIQUE because of its scale and their strong connection with the people and the local communities which gives them a great deal of influence. WHO is collaborating with the International Council of Nurses and the Nursing Now Campaign to produce the first ever State of the World’s Nurses 2020 Report. This will provide a global picture of the nursing workforce using validated data and provide guidance for countries that want to optimize this most valuable resource.
