Archdiocese of Saint Louis Archives and Records Cardinal Glennon College Records, 19482008 Descriptive Summary Abstract: Cardinal Glennon College Records contain administrative and student life materials from 1948 2008. Extent: 5 linear feet (8 boxes) Record Group Number: RG 03 D 05 Historical Note Cardinal Glennon College is the minor seminary, or preparatory college seminary, of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Its beginnings are traced back to the St. Louis Preparatory Seminary that opened in 1900, which encompassed 4 years of high school and two years of junior college. In 1931, it moved to the new building at 5200 Glennon Drive built by architect Henry P. Hess. In 1957, the St. Louis Preparatory Seminary became a 4 year high school and transferred to its own building at 5200 Shrewsbury Ave. The facility at Glennon Drive held the newly named Cardinal Glennon College, which encompassed 4 years of liberal arts college. The seminary system consisting of the Preparatory Seminary, Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary thus operated on a 444 year basis. Archbishop John L. May planned and executed a seminary system consolidation called New Start in response to finances and decreased enrollment. In 1987, Kenrick Seminary moved to the newly renovated building at Glennon Drive, and the institution became jointly called KenrickGlennon Seminary. However, Kenrick retained its status as a freestanding school of theology, and Glennon College adapted a collaborative model undergraduate program with the Saint Louis University College of Philosophy and Letters. College seminary students in their first two years attend Saint Louis University for classes but reside at the KenrickGlennon Seminary complex, where they receive their human and spiritual formation. Third and fourthyear college seminarians complete their philosophy studies at Cardinal Glennon College. A Board of Trustees for KenrickGlennon Seminary was established in 1988. In 1995, Archbishop Justin Rigali announced that after 177 years of collaboration between the Vincentian Community and the Archdiocese in the running of the Seminary, the Archdiocese would henceforth assume full responsibility. The Vincentians had run Cardinal Glennon College, Kenrick Seminary, and St. Louis Preparatory Seminary [South].
