Brighton Marina: From the games and boat area snuggled between independent café’s and shops, to the Who’s Who Star Walk, round past the fishing community with views back to shore and across the coast – a bounty of photographic and independent businesses to visit. The Marina construction dates back to the 1970’s. In the mid to late 80’s the Marina as we now see it was developed with homes and restaurants. There are continued disagreements and discussions as to what happens next to the area known as Brighton Rock, adjacent to Brighton Marina. 3 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights Great British Coast Roads.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk ds.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk 4 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights BRIGHTON SHOPPING, Key Symbols: Approximate distance in HISTORY AND ART miles/km between locations: Kemp Town We start off from Eaton Place, with properties dating back to the 1800’s. Eaton Place is part of a conservation area. We continue onto St Georges Road to enable us to reach independent shops and cafes in the area. In St Georges Road, we pass Sassoon Mausoleum, dating back to the 1800’s. It was a graveyard for the Jewish family originating from Bagdad, prior to running a business in India. In the 1900’s, this distinctive building on the corner of Paston Place was used as an air raid before becoming a bar. Today the venue is known as a bar/cabaret venue. The shopping area includes independent cafes, antiques, flea market, books and crafts as make our way into Bristol Road and Upper St James’ Street. Kemp Town: The buildings fronting Kemp Town are luxury properties dating back to the 1800’s. The area is known for its diversity, independent café’s and businesses amongst the more regular names on a street. We will focus on the irregular. 5 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights BRIGHTON SHOPPING, Key Symbols: Approximate distance in HISTORY AND ART miles/km between locations: Turning up Upper Rock Gardens, via Eastern Road we make an WC unusual stop at the top of Blaker street to look at the start of Building art on our tour, taking in the spirit of Brighton. Brighton’s Open Market Open Market: My first flat was based around the corner from the Open Market. We would also suggest taking a look at the building art on the corner of Vine Street. Kensington Street is known for its art to the rear of the buildings. In North Road we can book a pottery café if this is something you would like to take part in. We now move onto the Royal Pavillion area of Brighton. 8 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights Great British Coast Roads.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk ds.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk ds.co.uk 9 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights Great British Coast Roads.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk ds.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk ds.co.uk 10 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights Great British Coast Roads.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk ds.co.uk Great British Coast Roads.co.uk ds.co.uk 11 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights North Laines: A popular area for locals and of greatbritishcoastroads.co.uk. With it’s mix of independent shops, brightly decorated buildings and café culture, it is a souvenir paradise, a Christmas present zone full of ideas and a relaxing place to spend your day. Despite the areas proximity to the Royal Pavilion, until the mid18,00’s, this area’s condition was in stark contrast to the wealth nearby. Dirty, unhealthy living conditions led to properties eventual demolition and replacement with streets and houses for fitting for humans. In contrast, in the 1970’s the area was chosen for redevelopment but saved and now thrives with its diverse population and independent businesses. Suggested extras: Pottery Café -if you are part of a group, we can contact a pottery café and book on your behalf. You pay a fee on arrival and if you are staying in the area, collection can be arranged by you for your self-painted creation. 12 GreatbritishcoastroadsTV © The format of the information presented together with the logo’s and designs are copyrights BRIGHTON SHOPPING, Key Symbols: Approximate distance in HISTORY AND ART miles/km between locations: Royal Pavilion area: First of all, we head down Church Street to the entrance of the WC Pavilion Gardens. This is where we will find the galleries. In this area, as we snake up the side of the Dome to New Road, there are photographic opportunities, time to take in the street entertainment and perhaps relax in the gardens. We come back on ourselves, onto Church Street and then enter left into Brighton’s Bond Street Royal Pavilion: A photographer’s 24-hour paradise with its lights and twisting paths and gardens behind.
