Annual Report FY14 (Year ending May 31, 2014) Mission Statement The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE) and National Sexual Assault Online Hotline (online.rainn.org), publicizes the hotlines’ free, confidential services, educates the public about sexual violence, and leads national efforts to prevent sexual violence, improve services to victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice. Helping Victims —National Sexual Assault Hotline o The National Sexual Assault Hotline, which RAINN created in 1994, is the nation’s primary resource for victims of sexual violence. RAINN operates the hotline in partnership with its 1,041 local crisis center affiliates. o This year, the hotline provided free, confidential help to 95,900 people. o Since its inception, the hotline has helped more than 1.9 million victims of sexual violence. —National Sexual Assault Online Hotline o To better serve young victims, who prefer to communicate online, in 2006 RAINN launched the Online Hotline, the web’s first secure hotline service. o The Online Hotline went on to win the prestigious Technology Innovation Award from Npower and Accenture for being the best use of technology by a nonprofit. o The U.S. Department of Justice has identified the Online Hotline as a model program for using technology to serve victims. o This year, the Online Hotline provided live, one-on-one help to 43,343 people. o RAINN provided 9,212 hours of training for hotline staff and volunteers, up 66% from the previous year. Conducted 22 in-person trainings around the U.S. o Independent evaluation found users overwhelmingly pleased with services they received (average score over 4.32 on a scale of 1-5). —DoD Safe Helpline o Through a contract with the Department of Defense (DoD), RAINN created and operates services for members of the military affected by sexual assault. o We created DoD Safe Helpline (www.safehelpline.org) to provide live, one-on-one crisis intervention, emotional support, advice and information to the DoD community worldwide by phone and online, as well as referral information by text message. o Sexual assault survivors in the military now also have access to two additional Safe Hepline Services: Moderated peer-support via Safe HelpRoom, and a self-care app (available for iOS and Android). The app allows the user to create a personalized self-care plan and won the American Telemedicine Association’s President’s Award for Innovation. o While RAINN is operating the helplines for DoD, RAINN is required to keep all communications strictly anonymous and confidential. That means that no personally identifying information will ever be shared with DoD or the helpline user’s chain-of- command. Public Education —Media Coverage o RAINN was widely covered by and quoted in national media, including Associate Press, USA Today, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ABC News, NBC News, CNN, Rolling Stone and Glamour. o Partnered with following TV shows on storylines about sexual violence: Nickelodeon’s Degrassi, CBS’ NCIS, ABC’s Extreme Weight Loss. Each network donated PSAs and air-time to promote the National Sexual Assault Hotline. —rainn.org and Social Media o RAINN.org served more than 3.7 million visitors, up 37% from the previous year — more than any other website providing sexual assault information. o Mobile visitors accounted for 32% of visitors to rainn.org, up from 20% the previous year. o RAINN’s social media presence and engagement grew significantly over this fiscal year, resulting in: o 44, 276 Facebook fans (increase of 64%). o 23,540 Twitter followers (increase of 32%) o Collaborated with Facebook to host one of the first nonprofit "Q&As." RAINN’s president, Scott Berkowitz took live questions from supporters on topics ranging from the criminal justice system to the importance of educating high school students. —Educating College Students o RAINN Day, RAINN's annual college program, has educated millions of college students about preventing and recovering from sexual violence since its inception more than a decade ago. o Nearly 300 campuses participated in activities to raise awareness among their peers. —Speakers Bureau o Expanded RAINN’s Speakers Bureau to include more than 1,340 people. o Speakers publicly share their experience through media interviews and community presentations. Public Policy o RAINN expanded its state law databases to include two new sections: one on states' criminal codes, including definitions of rape and sexual assault, and one on states' laws regarding rapists' parental rights. Our additional databases on states' statutes of limitations, mandatory reporting laws, rape counselor privilege laws, and laws concerning HIV testing of rapists were also updated. o RAINN endorsed and helped to draft several pieces of legislation, including H.R. 2772, which incentivizes states to pass laws that block rapists from asserting parental rights over children conceived in the course of rape and the Kilah Davenport Act, which enhances allowable penalties for repeat child abuse and was signed into law by the president in May, 2014. o Spearheaded, in partnership with Natasha's Justice Project and the National Center for Victims of Crime, a new national initiative, the Rape Kit Action Project, to advance state policies and laws to address the rape-kit backlog. Helping Communities o RAINNtrain.org provided free online training courses to our local affiliates. o Recruited 9,386 volunteers for local sexual assault service providers through volopps.rainn.org, a 9.5% increase from the previous year.
