DR. EARL JAMES MCGRATH United States Commissioner of Education Dr. McGrath was born in Buffalo.Buffalo, New~ew York. He holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and hlasterMaster of Arts from the University of Buffalo and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. Honorary Degrees including Doctor of Laws, Literature, Science and Pedagogy have been conferred upon him by many other colleges and universities. At the Unive~sityUniversity of Buffalo he was, at various times, Lecturer in Psychology, Assistant to the Chancellor, Professor of Education and Dean of Administration. From 1933 to 1935 he was a Fellow in the Department of Education at the University of Chicago, later becoming a Lecturer in Higher Education at this universit)university and also the University of Minnesota. Dr. McGrath was commissioned Lieutenant Commander in the United StatesStatcs Naval Re~erveReserve and Special Educational Advisor and Consultant in the Navy Department in 1942. He was appointed Dean oEof the College of Liberal Arts, State University of Iowa in 1945 and later became Professor of Education at the University of Chicago. In March of 1949, Dr. McGrath received his appointme~~tappointment as United States Commissioner of Education in Washington, D. C. ~ DOCTOR OF- LAWS (LL.D.) DR. DEANE WALDO MALOTT President of Cornell University A native of Abilene, Kansas, Dr. Malott received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Kansas in 1921. He is also a graduate of Harvard University, where he received his Master's degree in Business Administration. Washington University in Topeka, Kansas, honored him with the degree of Doctor of Laws in 1941. He served as assistant dean at Harvard Business School from 1923 to 1929, when he became Vice-presidentVice-President of the Hawaiian Pineapplepineapple Con~panyCompany in Honolulu. He was appointed Associate Professor of Business at the Harvard Business School in 1933 and in 1939 became President of the University of Kansas. He was elected President of Cornell University this year. His affiliations include the Directorship of the Graton and Knight Company, General Mills, Incorporated and membership in the Business Advisory Council, Department of Commerce, since 1944. Dr. Malott is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Secretary-Treasurer of the Associa~ionAssociation of American Universities and a member or a trustee of several schools and Trust Companies.Companie~. Dr. Malott is the author and coauthorco-author of many books on business including studies of ,Marketing,-Marketing, Finance, Public Utilities and Industry. c&wu~ DOCTOR OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (D.S. inIII B.A.) HON.HaN. WILLIAM EDMONDS POWERS Attorney General of the State of Rhode Island Attorney General Powers was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island. A graduate of St. Patrick's Parochial School he was graduated from Boston University with the Degree of Bachelor of Laws. After beginning the practice of law in 1935 he was appointed Judge of Cumberland Probate Court ill 1936, a position he held until 1949. A member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for ten years, 1939 to 1949, Mr. Powers was elected Attorney General of this state in 1948 and re-elected in 1950. He was the first graduate to be awarded the Certificate of Distinction from Boston University. An honor student at the University for six semesters, he was also Associate Editor of the Law Review, Class Orator and was graduated second in his class. ~ DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS (D. H. L.) DR. ARTHUR HOWE BRADFORD Pastor of Central Congregational Church Dr. Bradford, born in Montclair, New Jersey, is a direct descendant of Governor William Bradford of the Plymouth Colony. Graduated from Yale University in 1905, he was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1909 upon his graduation from Union Theological Seminary. He has received the Honorary Degree of Master of Arts from Yale in addition to the degrees of Doctor of Divinity from both Brown University and Middlebury College. In 1952, when he will have completed thirty-four years of service as minister of the Central Congregational Church in Providence, he plans to retire. Dr. Bradford was elected the First President of the Rhode Island Council of Churches in April of this year. He is widely known as an author and lecturer.
