It also promotes good practice in characterising those microstructural features which are relevant to materials performance in order that more informed choices of material can be made for specific applications. Microstructural parameters are described. They are typically characterised in several ways, including measures of grain size, crystallite texture, porosity, and phase volume fractions, as well as the detection of occasional features such as cracks, abnormal grains and inclusions. The importance of microstructural characterisation of these classes of material is reviewed, and possible measurement methods and methods of preparation of test-pieces for making the measurements are described. Based on information taken from the technical literature as well as data generated during NPL research programmes, correlations between microstructural parameters and properties are discussed.
