Common and Proper Nouns-Technology Based Lesson Summary Students in this lesson will learn about and be able to use common and proper nouns. They will be introduced to common and proper nouns using a Prezi presentation. Students will then play online games to test and increase knowledge of proper and common nouns.They will take an online quiz to test their knowledge and generate sentences using common and proper nouns. Main Core Tie English Language Arts Grade 1 Language Standard 1 c. Time Frame 1 class periods of 90 minutes each Group Size Large Groups Life Skills Communication Materials The materials needed for this lesson is access to the Prezi website and access to online games. Students should also have a journal or some paper that they can write sentences on. Student Prior Knowledge It is important that before students begin this lesson that they have a firm understanding of what a noun is. Intended Learning Outcomes Students will be able to identify common and proper nouns in sentences. Students will be able to use common and proper nouns in a sentence. Students will be able to differentiate a proper noun from a common noun when seen in a sentence. Instructional Procedures 1. The teacher will present the Prezi presentation on common and proper nouns to the class. In this presentation the teacher will be sure to explain the difference between common and proper nouns and explain what they are. The teacher will also explain how to use common and proper nouns in sentences by explaining that proper nouns are capitalized while common nouns are not. They teacher will go through the slides of the Prezi and point out how the proper nouns are capitalized in the sentences they are used in while the common nouns are not. 2. After presentation teacher will create a two columns on the whiteboard and will label one common nouns and one proper nouns. The teacher will ask the students to tell them a noun. The class will vote by the raise of hand whether they think the noun presented is common or proper then the teacher will write the word under the correct column. 3. Allow students access to computers. Direct them to basketball noun game from gameclassroom.com and located at http://www.gameclassroom.com/game/32738-3218/singular-and- plural-nouns/noun-dunk. Explain to students that in order to make a dunk they need to determine if the word on their basketball is a common noun, a proper noun, or not a noun at all. Allow students time to play the game. 4. Direct students to the game involving the rat catching nouns on the learning planet website located at http://www.learningplanet.com/act/rats/rats3.asp?rats_compropnouns. Give directions to the game if needed and allow students time to play the game. 5. Talk to students about their progress on the games. Based off of teacher observation of the game determine if students need review or more explanation of common or proper nouns. Provide that explanation if needed. After the review it is optional to let them try the games again. 6. Have students take quiz from www.softschools.com and have them print off or write down results. 7.Have each student write one or two sentences that have both a common and proper noun in them. Assessment Plan Steps 6 and 7 are the assessment portions of the activity. The quiz from www.softschools.com demonstrates the objective that students should be able to differentiate between a common noun and proper noun in sentences. The quiz asks students to identify if an underlined noun in a sentence is common or proper. Step 7 asked that students write one or two sentences that used common and proper nouns in them. If students are able to write the sentences with the proper nouns capitalized and the common ones not then they are able to use common and proper nouns correctly in a sentence.
