McDonald 11th June 2015 College Items for newsletter to be sent by 12 noon Wednesdays to: [email protected] No school tomorrow Report writing day - Pupil free I hope everyone had a great long weekend and a reminder that students have a very short week this week with Friday being a pupil free day. Teachers are currently preparing reports which will go out on the last day of term, so now is a great time for parents to have conversations about what work needs to be completed prior to the end of term. Students can then use Friday to catch up or stay on top of their work. A reminder, that the deadline for students to achieve an “S” for their unit 1 or unit 3 VCE study is this Friday at 4.00pm. Hannah Braisby, Remmi King, Caitlyn Cassar and William Braunstein, participated in the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition last Friday. Miss McLennan has told me that all our CALENDAR students “did brilliantly” especially JuneJuneJune in the impromptu 12 PUPIL FREE DAY speech. I would like to 16 Yr 7 Cows Create Careers, Cobden congratulate these Yr 10-12 Boys Hockey students for giving Dimboola this competition a go Primary WWSSA Lightning Premiership and also to Miss Nhill McLennan for her 17 Yr 9 GWM Water Conf. organisation. Horsham Last week Year 10 participated in work experience week and we had 19 Yr 1 Minyip Buddies Visit students all over Victoria (some in SA) attend workplaces and experience 23 Careers Expo Horsham what their chosen career is really like. Feedback from students and 24 Yr 11/12 Girls Soccer workplaces has been positive and I would like to thank Kathryn Champness GWR W’bool 9/10 Boys Soccer GWR for all the planning she has done. W’bool Unit 3/4 students sat the GAT yesterday. This is the only mid-year exam for 26 End of Term 2.30 end our senior students and I hope the experience assists all our students to approach the end of year exams with a degree of confidence and understanding. I have noticed a number of students wearing black pants to school. Our College Council has approved navy school pants and I ask that parents ensure students either have a note or are in correct uniform. Last Friday four of our Year 8 students participated in the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award in Horsham. Our representatives were Hannah Braisby, William Braunstein, Caitlin Cassar and Remmi King. They all presented a five-minute prepared speech on a topic that related to broader themes of social justice, caring or volunteering. They were all able to draw upon their own experiences to deliver thoughtful and genuine messages. Once the prepared speeches concluded, all of the participants had to complete a two-minute impromptu speech on the topic, ‘A person I admire’. They only had a few minutes to collect their ideas before they were back in front of their audience to deliver the second speech. All of our students handled themselves brilliantly and again presented confident and considered speeches, despite the pressure and the nerves of the situation. The competition was very even this year, and I think that all of our students gained a lot from the experience. I also think that they must have enjoyed it, given the singing all the way home. Prep students enjoyed a visit from the Police yesterday. The class is learning about Emergency Services and will be meeting the Ambulance service later today. Mates’ cooking activity (pizza making) with mentees and mentors from 2013 and 2014. Year 10 are learning about the properties of plastics and polymers. Yesterday they made slime to demonstrate how properties can change after chemical reactions. Student teacher Jenna Fowlie has spent almost 3 weeks at our senior school. Jenna is studying her Bachelor of Physical Education at Federation University in Ballarat. She said she has really enjoyed her rural placement and our community.
