My LORD, WE his Majesty's faithful and loyal Subjects, the Council of Virginia, now met in General Assembly, beg Leave to return your Excellency our sincere Thanks for your kind Speech at the Opening of this Session, and to congratulate you on your safe Arrival to the Government of this antient Dominion. The early Attention your Excellency hath shewn to the Welfare of this Colony, and the earnest Inclination you have expressed to promote its Prosperity, give us a sure Presage of the Happiness we may expect to enjoy under your Excellency's prudent Administration. The great Object of our warmest Wishes hath ever been to enrich our Country, by giving Encouragement to new Improvements, and quickening thereby the Industry of the People to make Use of those Advantages which Providence hath so bountifully bestowed on us, and to enable us to preserve that mutual Relation which ought always to subsist between the Parent Country and its Colonies. We have only to assure your Excellency of our Readiness to concur with the other Branch of the Legislature in forming such Laws as we shall judge to be for the Interest and Benefit of our Country, and the Honour of the Crown, and not incompatible with your Excellency's Duty to assent to. To which his EXCELLENCY was pleased to return the following ANSWER. Gentlemen, I AM extremely obliged to you for your Address. I conceive the fairest Hopes of my Administration from the Assistance of a Council, whose Zeal for the Honour of the Crown can only be equalled by, what is altogether as agreeable to our most just Sovereign, your warm Attachment to the Interests of your Country.
