A bit of history The name ‘Shepton’ comes from the Old English ‘scoep’ and ‘tun’ meaning ‘the sheep enclosure’. Shepton Mallet is situated on the historic Fosse Way. There is archaeological evidence of early military and then later, civilan settlement there, lasting into the 5th century, and remains have been found that indicate that there was military activity in this area during the 1st and 2nd centuries. Charters for holding markets and fairs were granted during the 13th and early 14th centuries, as the town developed and grew until hit by the Black Death in 1348, which reduced the population to about 300. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, the town began to prosper again, as cloth making, along with the wool trade, became a major industry, boosting the town’s economy. © Kilver Court Gardens Shepton Mallet by Dmvward Local information i There are two medical centres within i Emergency responders a mile of Field House: The area of Shepton Mallet is covered by the Cannards Grave Road following services: Shepton Mallet Police – Avon and Somerset Constabulary BA4 5RT Shepton Mallet Police Station Tel: 01749 334 383 Commercial Road Grove House Surgery Shepton Mallet West Shepton BA4 5BU Shepton Mallet Fire – Devon and Somerset BA4 5UH Board Cross Tel: 01749 342 314 Shepton Mallet BA4 5DX i There is one hospital local to Shepton Mallet: Ambulance – South Western Shepton Mallet Community Hospital i Here are some of the churches in Old Wells Road Shepton Mallet: Shepton Mallet BA4 4PG Shepton Mallet Baptist Church Tel: 01749 342 931 St. Peter & St. Paul Parish Church i There are two dental practices within i Nearby schools include: a mile of Field House: Shepton Mallet Community Infants’ School & ADP Dental Practice Nursery 13 Town Street Waterloo Road, Shepton Mallet Shepton Mallet Age range: 3-7 BA4 5BE St. Pauls C of E Junior School Tel: 01749 342 560 Paul Street, Shepton Mallet High Street Dental Age range: 7-11 20 High Street Whitstone School Shepton Mallet Charlton Road, Shepton Mallet BA4 5AN Age range: 11-16 Tel: 01749 343 940 i Local Authority information: District Council - Mendip County Council - Somerset Member of Parliament for Shepton Mallet - James Heappey, Conservative Postcode district - BA4 Dialling code - 01749 i i Local transport There are many bus stops in Shepton Mallet, the nearest bus stop to Field House is located on Cannards Grave Road.
