The Bruins finished the regular season with a 25-30-1 overall record. Sophomore James Kaprielian 2/18 Cal State Northridge W 7-1 led the Pac-12 Conference with 108 strikeouts on the season while UCLA as a staff allowed the fewest walks 2/21 Cal Poly (22) W 5-2 in the Pac-12 with 154. The Bruins played a tough schedule in 2014, playing the fourth-toughest schedule in 2/22 Cal Poly (22) L 8-0 the nation. This marks the ninth consecutive year that UCLA has played a schedule that is ranked among the 2/23 Cal Poly (22) L 9-1 top-five most difficult in the country. UCLA made 17 total appearances on the Pac-12 Networks this season and two appearances 3/7 Pepperdine L 8-7 on ESPNU as well. In total, eight of the 19 TV appearances came at Jackie Robinson Stadium. 3/8 Houston L 4-3 3/9 at USC W 6-5 NO. 1 STARTER 3/11 UC Irvine W 5-0 Sophomore right-hander James Kaprielian served as UCLA’s Friday night starter all season and flourished in 3/14 at California* W 3-2 his newfound role. After earning freshman All-America honors from Perfect Game USA and Collegiate Baseball 3/15 at California* W 3-1 in 2013, Kaprielian continued that success into 2014, posting a 7-6 record with a 2.29 ERA (seventh-lowest 3/16 at California*# W 6-1 in the Pac-12) and a conference-leading 108 strikeouts. His 108 strikeouts were also good for 17th-most in 3/21 Washington State* L 2-0 the nation. In addition, Kaprielian’s 2.29 ERA was the lowest among all UCLA starting pitchers and his 106 3/22 Washington State* W 4-2 innings pitched led all UCLA pitchers (sixth-most in the Pac-12). Kaprielian also held opposing hitters to a .201 3/23 Washington State* W 8-7 (10) batting average against him, the fifth-lowest opposing average in the Pac-12, and allowed two runs or less in 3/25 Long Beach State# W 2-1 11 of his 15 starts. In addition, Kaprielian pitched at least six innings in 13 of his 15 starts (including the last 3/28 Arizona State* W 7-3 11) and logged double-digit strikeouts five times this season. Finally, Kaprielian was particularly effective down 3/29 Arizona State* L 8-5 the stretch, posting a 1.72 ERA and 32 strikeouts in his final four starts. 3/30 Arizona State* L 6-5 (10) 4/1 at Loyola Marymount W 5-3 SATURDAY STARTER 4/4 at Long Beach State W 1-0 (11) Junior left-hander Grant Watson moved up from being UCLA’s Sunday starter in 2013 to the team’s Saturday 4/5 Long Beach State L 4-0 starter in 2014. Watson went 4-9 in 17 appearances (15 starts) this season, striking out 71 batters in 97 4/6 at Long Beach State L 8-5 innings pitched while posting a 3.80 ERA. He also led all Pac-12 pitchers with five pickoffs this season. In his 4/8 at Cal State Fullerton (18) L 4-3 career, Watson has logged a 21-14 record as a starter and pitched at least six innings in 12 of his 15 starts 4/11 at Arizona*# W 8-0 this season. In addition, Watson posted 10 quality starts this year (6 IP, 3 ER or less). 4/12 at Arizona*# L 3-2 4/13 at Arizona*# L 6-5 ROUNDING OUT THE ROTATION 4/17 at Utah*# W 3-1 Sophomore right-hander Cody Poteet rounded out the Bruins’ rotation in 2014, serving as the team’s Sunday 4/18 at Utah*# L 8-6 starter. After playing with the Walla Walla Sweets of the West Coast League this past summer and being 4/19 at Utah* W 7-3 selected as one of the league’s All-Stars, Poteet went 3-5 in 17 appearances (15 starts) for the Bruins, logging 4/22 Loyola Marymount W 3-0 an ERA of 4.46 while striking out 49 batters in 78.2 innings pitched. He also surrendered just 16 walks all 4/24 USC*# L 10-0 season, the fifth-fewest in the conference. Additionally, Poteet logged quality starts in five of his last six starts 4/25 USC*# L 3-2 of the season. His best start of the year came on March 2 vs. Michigan at the Notre Dame Classic, where he 4/26 USC* L 7-4 pitched a complete game two-hit shutout while striking out a career-high 13 batters and walking none. 4/29 at UC Santa Barbara T 5-5 (12) 5/2 Stanford* W 7-2 PLAYING FROM AHEAD 5/3 Stanford*# L 5-0 In the last two seasons, UCLA has done a tremendous job of getting an early lead and then not relinquishing 5/4 Stanford* L 5-2 that lead. Additionally, UCLA has a record of 28-9 in the last two 5/10 at Oregon State*# (2) L 9-3 seasons when scoring in the first inning. 5/11 at Oregon State*# (2) L 11-2 5/13 at UC Irvine (24) L 10-2 ALL-PAC-12 TEAM 5/16 Oregon*# L 2-1 UCLA landed three players on the All-Pac-12 team in 2014 in pitchers David Berg and James Kaprielian and 5/17 Oregon*# L 4-1 catcher/infielder Shane Zeile. Berg served as UCLA’s closer during the year, going 3-2 with a team-leading 1.50 5/18 Oregon*# L 5-4 (11) ERA and 11 saves in 31 relief appearances. He also struck out 35 batters in 48 innings pitched, allowing just 5/23 at Washington* (8) W 3-0 eight earned runs all year and walking only eight. Berg earned All-Conference honors for the third consecutive 5/24 at Washington*# (8) W 6-3 year, making him just the fifth UCLA player all-time to receive All-Pac-12 acclaim in three different seasons 5/25 at Washington*# (8) L 6-1 (Garrett Atkins (1998-2000), Trevor Bauer (2009-11), Dennis Delany (1976-78) and Adam Plutko (2011- * Pac-12 Conference game 13). Zeile started all 56 games for the Bruins, leading the team in batting average (.324), hits (70), slugging % USA Baseball-Irish Classic (Games played in Cary, N.C.) percentage (.421) and RBI (28).
