Smith’s Scoop October 28, 2019 *Wear all black (or close to black) for our big Word Detective Celebration on Friday, November 1st! *Tuesday, October 29th is the fiftieth day of school, so first grade will dress up like the 1950’s. Please look for the Sign-Up Genius to volunteer to help make the children root- beer floats from 12:30 – 1:40. If you want to have your child be all-in and get completely dressed up, go for it! Girls - Poodle skirts, dresses, traditional sweater, fake pearls, bobby socks, pony tails, etc. Boys – rolled up jeans and t-shirts, rolled up kakis, dress shirt, traditional sweater or V-neck pull over, team jacket, jean jacket, bomber jacket, slicked-back hair, etc. Please just have fun. If your child is shy, make sure they wear jeans and I will roll them up! We will have root-beer floats and chew bubble gum. This covers some of our social studies standards of comparing the past to present. We will be seeing how people dressed, how TV shows like Andy Griffith were in black & white, we will listen and dance to 1950’s songs, and read children books from the 1950’s. ! We will have writing assignments and math centers from the 1950’s. I hope that you enjoy the process of building a Veteran’s Day mini-float with your child. You may decide to just let your child do it with household items like shoe or cereal boxes. You may want to help and even get a few special things for the float. You may decide you want to have fun creating a fancy float. Have your child decide if he/she wants to carry or pull the float. The boxes can just slide on the floor if you add a string or ribbon. Feel free to make copies of pictures of family veterans or get fancy crafting stuff. If moms or dads want to use wood and be creative – by all means just enjoy yourself! Most important, let the children understand that it is the Veterans of our family and country that we have to thank for our precious freedom! It is due on Friday, November 8th for a grade so that your child can present it to the class. All families are welcome to come watch the parade on Monday, November 11th now set promptly for 8:00am. Enjoy yourselves with this project – it really turns out to be a meaningful experience for all the children!
