Trans-Tasman Resources (TTR) hoped to move in on the home of these magnificent mammals, commencing experimental seabed iron sand mining. Their plan was to spend the next 35 years sucking up 8000 tonnes of seafloor every hour – a plan that would have seen 65km2 of seabed between South Taranaki and Golden Bay destroyed. When TTR came knocking, Forest & Bird took legal action. 8000 In August 2018, the High Court tonnes of agreed that TTR’s ‘suck it and see’ risk management model seafloor was ‘adaptive management’, prohibited under the Exclusive Economic Zone Act. In areas without pest control, four out of five kiwi chicks don’t survive their first year. During 2018 Forest & Bird raised public awareness about New Zealand’s biodiversity crisis. We explained how local populations of native birds, lizards, insects, and bats are being threatened with extinction every day. Thankfully, in May last year, we received some very welcome news. Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage announced an increase in conservation funding that will see nearly 10 times more New Zealand conservation forests managed for predators. “This funding for the Department of Conservation is critical for the survival of our native birds, bats, After four years, lizards, and insects killed about one-third of by predators such as stoats, rats, and possums.” public conservation KEVIN HACKWELL, CHIEF land will have CONSERVATION ADVISER. regular pest After four years, about one- management. third of public conservation land will have regular pest A significant management – a significant win for nature! win for nature! © Rob Suisted / naturespic.com Suisted © Rob FORESTANDBIRD.ORG.NZ Thank you to our partners: © Richard Robinson / Depth Robinson © Richard THE ROYAL FOREST AND BIRD PROTECTION SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND INC. 20 ANNUAL REPORT 18 TE PŪRONGO Ā-TAU WILL YOU BE A VOICE FOR NATURE?
