His is widely experienced in aerosol science technology and measurement backed by formal academic courses in Aerosol technology, atmospheric chemistry, meteorology, the atmosphere and participation in over 15 related pre-conference tutorials. This is further backed by professional competency in nuclear and scientific instrumentation, and a strong background in hands on experience in the aviation industry. He coordinated joint International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Kenya programs on nuclear and scientific instrumentation between 1989 and 2012 where he directed over 10 regional training courses besides National ones and was IAEA expert in Vienna, Cőrte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and Ethiopia. He was appointed to the IAEA Technical advisory committee on nuclear instrumentation and applications in 1997 and 2012. Michael has received research grants, since 2008, from International Science Programme (ISP) in Sweden, UNEP, Agrifood Research Finland through World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi and Center for Sustainable Urban Development (CSUD) at Columbia University in New York, USA. He also received travel grants from International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), GAeF, UNEP-Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC) Science Committee in Bangkok and Ev-K2-CNR in Italy. He chaired the working group that drafted the ABC-Africa whitepaper and was appointed chairman of ABC-Africa by the UNEP ABC Science Committee. He has established a rich research and collaboration network in Sweden (Gothenburg, Stockholm, Uppsala and Umeå Universities), Netherlands (Delft University of Technology, Wetsus-European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology and NHL University of Applied Sciences), Italy (Brescia University), USA (Center for Sustainable Urban Development (CSUD)-Columbia University in New York), Canada (McMaster University) and Taiwan (Cheng Kung University in Tainan), UK (Birmingham and Leicester Universities) and in India (IIT-Madras Chennai). Prior to joining the university and embarking on further education he had served the Kenya Air Force for 9 years and retired at the rank of a Captain in charge of aircraft avionics.
