J U L Y 2 0 2 0 NZMUN I N F O R M A T I O N P A C K U N + D E C I D E D T O U R 2 0 2 0 FROM THE CONVENOR Kia ora! Across the Tasman lies a country with awe-inspiring beauty, rich culture, and where its people are undoubtedly its greatest treasurer. I am of course talking about New Zealand. My name is Dickson and this year it is my absolute pleasure and privilege to be the convenor of New Zealand Model United Nations 2020 (NZMUN). This July, UN Youth Australia is offering 10 remarkable young people from across the country the opportunity to travel to New Zealand and immerse themselves in what is sure to be a phenomenal week, whose memories and impact are sure to be cherished and felt for years to come. NZMUN offers an unparalleled opportunity across UN Youth Australia’s international activities by providing you with a platform to interact with like-minded peers from one of our closest allies. Through interactive workshops, committee debates, special committee debates, a plenary session and a mix of social activities; NZMUN arguably has everything you can possibly need in life: MUN, stimulating educational content, and life long friendships. Organised by our partner organization - UN Youth New Zealand. NZMUN will once again return to Wellington, with this year’s conference theme being UN+Decided. Over the week we’ll explore issues currently facing the globe and how rangatahi (the youth) can influence decision making and have their say on global issues such as climate change, technological advancements, and globalisation. During the week you’ll be meeting with some of the best and brightest young minds from New Zealand where you’ll engage in thought-provoking discussions which will allow you to challenge and be challenged. By immersing yourself in the opportunities presented to you during the tour, we hope to not only open your eyes to some of the issues affecting the youth beyond Australia’s borders but also inspire you to seek innovative ideas to enact change in your own way. This pack will provide you with some information on the trip that will be useful prior to applying for the tour. You’ll find some details about the itinerary, costs, and outcomes as well as information on our welfare procedures to ensure we keep everyone safe while we’re away. If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] I am thoroughly excited about NZMUN 2020 and I hope to receive your application to join me on this remarkable tour. Cheers, Dickson Wamukoya-Garbutt Convener U N + D E C I D E D T O U R 2 0 2 0 ABOUT US About UN Youth Australia UN Youth Australia is a not-for-profit, entirely youth-led organisation, coordinated entirely by young volunteers aged 15-24. We are dedicated to educating young people about international relations, human rights, and the United Nations, and empowering young people to become leaders in their communities and Australia. Through its divisions in every state and territory across Australia, UN Youth Australia provides an impressive array of events each year centred around global affairs. We believe in the value of peer-to- peer education and have been inspiring young students for decades to become engaged with the world around them. For more information on UN Youth, please visit our website at www.unyouth.org.au. About the tour We are looking for ten students from across Australia to join us from July 1 - 6 in Wellington for NZMUN 2020. NZMUN is a conference where students from across New Zealand come together once a year to learn about the UN, international relations, engage in model UN debates and essentially learn how the countries navigate global issues. Traveling to Wellington in July, the Australian delegation will be the only international delegation joining our fellow New Zealand cousins. The tour will undoubtedly offer a wonderful insight into the Australian New Zealand partnership. U N + D E C I D E D T O U R 2 0 2 0 UN+Decided The theme for 2020 is UN+Decided – an acknowledgement that the decisions we make today are the stories we tell tomorrow. This emphasises how rangatahi (the youth) can influence decision making and have their say on global issues such as climate change, technological advancement, and impending elections. We currently live in a society that is at a crossroads due to modernity, globalisation, and political complexity which has led to uncertainty, and “undecidedness”. We want to encourage delegates to move beyond complacency through voicing their unique perspective on global affairs. The uniqueness of NZMUN is based on emphasising that the youth voice, in today’s day and age, is of utmost importance. As the generation that will go on to bring change, it is vital that delegates leave the conference feeling empowered to express their opinion and seek the changes they wish to see. The tour is not intended to force a singular, perfect solution to complex, contentious and futuristic problems, but rather to emphasise the importance of unity, innovation, context, and sustainability when approaching these problems. It is through developing skill sets, education and encouraging alternative perspectives that we wish delegates to become empowered, rather than an ability to come to a black and white answer. U N + D E C I D E D T O U R 2 0 2 0 PLANNED ITINERARY July 1 Arrive in Wellington and meet the rest of the delegation. July 2 First day of the conference and opening ceremony. U N + D E C I D E D T O U R 2 0 2 0 WELFARE POLICIES UN Youth Australia and the NZMUN volunteer team place a priority on safety and take welfare incredibly seriously. Each NZMUN Facilitator will possess an Apply First Aid Certificate (formerly Senior First Aid) and a Mental Health First Aid Certificate. UN Youth Australia has a comprehensive Federal Welfare Policy, which we will ensure is complied with in the lead up to, throughout and after NZMUN 2020. Our priority is ensuring that you are safe, respected, happy and enjoy the Tour as much as possible. It is a requirement that all delegates agree to and complete the delegate code of conduct and first aid consent form as part of their online application. Each UN Youth Australia Facilitator will possess an Apply First Aid Certificate (formerly Senior First Aid) and a Mental Health First Aid Certificate. Also included in the application are the Welfare Arbitration Procedures that we use in the event of a breach of the Welfare Policy. The welfare policies are designed to ensure that both facilitators and delegates all stay healthy and able to enjoy ourselves to the greatest possible extent. It is crucially important that you understand your rights and responsibilities as per the Welfare Policy – if you or your parents have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us. The full UN Youth Australia Welfare policies are available in the application form, and it is a requirement that you read them. It is important that all welfare information is disclosed to us so that we can arrange things and ensure that the facilitator team is able to assist everyone in having a positive experience on the tour. In order to ensure that we can maximise your safety, enjoyment and participation in the tour, you will be required to submit a Welfare Management Plan if you identify as having a serious health condition (including all chronic illnesses, mental health conditions for which you are taking medication, and any injury or disability that limits your full participation in NZMUN 2020). Your Welfare Management Plan must be written by a medical professional – typically your GP. We will contact any delegates whom we believe this applies to about creating a Welfare Management Plan as part of the confirmation process. U N + D E C I D E D T O U R 2 0 2 0 COST & SPONSORSHIPS The tour cost of NZMUN 2020 is estimated to be a total of $2000 It is important to note that this cost is an estimate; the leadership team will continue to explore opportunities for minimising costs in the lead up to the tour and the fee also may need to change in response to flight costs increasing or other unforeseen circumstances. Should this happen your parents and guardians will be notified. The tour cost will be paid in several installments in the lead up to departure in July 2020. This total includes: Return flights All ground transport All accommodation All scheduled activities Comprehensive travel insurance Most meals Please bring additional money in case you wish to purchase additional meals, souvenirs or participate in external activities. In the case where you cannot meet the set payment dates, UN Youth Australia is happy to negotiate an individualised plan that suits your needs. We will provide a detailed sponsorship guide, as well as support to aid delegates in seeking individual financial support for their tour fees. These packages will not only provide a basis for you to pitch to the entities from which you seek assistance but also contain advice sourced from world leading financial institutions in how effective sponsorship pitches are made.
