Doubling their victories again this year could put the Screaming Eagles back into the GLVC Tournament and would give them double-figures in wins for the 14th time in the history of the program. The Eagles made progress in 2005, finishing 5-12-0 overall and 3-9-0 in the GLVC. Now USI is looking to continue the bounce back into the GLVC tournament this year. USI Head Coach Dan Hogan begins his seventh season at the helm and has the challenge of mixing 13 newcom- ers with 17 returning players (10 starters). DEFENSE: The Eagles' defense begins with center backs in senior Brian Shepherd and junior Matt Vossmer. Shepherd started all 17 matches in 2005 and gave the Eagles some offensive punch from the defensive side of the field. The senior was second on the team in scoring with four goals, including a game-winner over Saint Joseph's College. Vossmer grew into one of USI's steadiest defenders, starting every game for a second straight season. In addition to Shepherd and Vossmer, the Eagles bring back juniors Corey Hendon, Justin Olson, and Suleiman Khan; and sophomore Dan Grunewald. Grunewald played significant minutes during his first season with the Ea- gles, starting 14 of 16 matches, while Hendon played in 14 matches and made nine starts. New defenders for 2006 are junior Carl Carr and freshman Robert Elliott. Carr transfers to USI after two seasons at Martin Methodist College. Carr, who redshirted in 2005, had three assists in 15 matches in 2004 and four assists in 17 matches in 2003 for the Redhawks. Prior to joining the Martin Methodist program, Carr lettered in tennis, soccer, and cricket at William Howard School (Bramton, Cumbria, England). Elliott joins USI after four varsity seasons, three as the team captain, at Madisonville North High School. Elliott was first team All-State, All-District, and All-Region as a senior, helping lead MNHS to the 2005 district and regional championships. He also was a three-time Academic All-State performer. Between the posts, Hogan returns sophomore Jake Bryan and brings in junior Andrew Hults and freshman Brad Cadden. Bryan played in three matches a year ago, saving his best for the season finale. He set a single-match record, mak- ing 15 saves, despite losing the match, 2-1, to Lewis University. Bryan had a 4.50 goals against average (GAA) in three matches and 180 minutes. Hults transfers to USI from Meramec Community College (St. Louis, Missouri). Hults was the top ranked goalkeeper in the NJCAA in 2004 and was named All-Region and All-Conference in 2004 and 2005. He ranked first nationally in 2004 with a 0.500 GAA and 13th in 2005 with a 0.765 GAA. MIDFIELDERS: The midfield has the largest portion of returning players in 2006 with six. Leading the way is USI's top returning scorer, junior Evan Stoll. Stoll scored a team-best five goals, including two game-winners. He started 14 of the 17 matches last fall and was second on the team with 25 shots. 2 2006 USI Men’s Soccer Outlook Returning with Stoll are seniors Richie Maldonado and Eric Brewer; juniors Jason Blose and Quintin Myers; and sophomore Tyree Robinson. Myers had five points in 12 matches on a goal and three assists, while Maldonado had four points on a goal and two assists. Bolstering the depth in the midfield are six freshmen -- Nathan Bower, Paul Hutchens, Kyle Leffel, James Neville, William Reid, and Ed Thiebe. Bower begins his collegiate career after three years on the Elkhart Memorial High School varsity soccer team. He was the senior captain last season in helping EMHS to the Elkhart Sectional finals. Bower had five goals and four assists the last two seasons as the starting center midfielder. Hutchens was a three-time All-Area and All-Conference performer at Vernon Hills High School (Vernon Hills, Illi- nois). Hutchens had eight goals and two assists as a senior, finishing his high school playing days with 27 career goals and 25 career assists in three years. He had a high school career-best with 13 goals and nine assists as a junior. Leffel makes the jump to collegiate soccer after two years on the Memorial High School (Evansville, Indiana) varsity team. Leffel was second team All-City and All-Conference last year and helped lead the Tigers to an appearance in the 2005 Indiana Boys Soccer Tournament finals. Neville joins USI's team after helping Memorial High School to the 2005 Indiana Boys Soccer Tournament finals. He also was a member of the 2003 Elite U-16 team that won the state championship. Reid adds offensive punch to the USI line-up after four seasons at Plainfield High School. He had 11 goals and 11 assists as a junior and six goals and nine assists as a senior. Reid finished his career with 20 goals and 30 assists. He was recognized for his accomplishments by being named to the Indianapolis Star's All-West Boys Soccer team in 2005 and All-Conference in 2004 and 2005. Thiebe earned varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and track and field at Martinsville High School (Martinsville, Indi- ana). He was named the MHS Offensive Most Valuable Player in 2003; All-Conference in 2004 and 2005; and set the single-season school record for assists in 2005. Thiebe also helped MHS to the 2005 sectional championship. FORWARDS: Junior Michael Dugger leads four returning forwards and three newcomers into 2006. He was third on the team in scoring with three goals and one assist for seven points. Also coming back to the USI offense is senior Brett Palazzolo and sophomores Mike Bendzen and Matthew Long. Bendzen tied for fifth on the team with five points on a goal and three assists. New up front for the Eagles are sophomore Anthony Foerster and freshmen Nick Garing and Frank Catone. Garing played for the Christian Academy of Indiana (New Albany, Indiana) prior to committing to the USI program. He led Christian Academy with 12 goals in 2005 and recorded 21 career goals. He also was named the Christian Academy Offensive Most Valuable Player as a senior. Foerster restarts his collegiate soccer career after two years in the United States Navy. He transfers to USI from Oakland City University where he had 19 points on six goals and seven assists as a freshman in 2001. Foerster scored 110 career points during his four years at Forest Park High School (Ferdinand, Indiana) on 40 goals and 30 assists.
