It’s been a difficult season, but the girls are really hoping to finish on a high and with three points at The Hive this afternoon. We’re obviously disappointed with how the season has played out and we were desperate to finish higher up the table. The girls have given everything they have this season and I hope our fans can see all the effort everyone’s put in on and off the pitch this year. Whilst it’s been difficult, I hope we still have made all the Bees fans proud this season, despite some challenging results. I just wanted to thank firstly Lee for his effort during his time with us and give a massive thank you to Sian, Craig, Karl, Connor, Adam, Dimi and Luigi for all of their efforts behind the scenes this season. They work tirelessly for us and work so hard to give us everything so that we can be prepared for each match. They are a credit to the Club and they deserve a good rest over the summer! Lastly, I just want to thank the fans for all of their support, we’ve really missed having you in the stadium over these past 18 months and it’s been really difficult playing without you. In the meantime, have a great summer, keep safe and hopefully we’ll see you soon. Come on you Bees! Last weekend saw the fourth round of the FA Cup take place, with some notably high scoring ties. Chelsea, winners of the competition in 2015 and 2018, won 5-0 against London City Lionesses, holders Manchester City demolished WSL rivals Aston Villa 8-0, whilst Birmingham City were 5-1 victors over West Midlands rivals Coventry United. West Ham United smashed 11 past Chichester and Selsey without reply, Liverpool, winners in 1994,1995 and 1996, lost 1-0 away at Leicester City, third tier Middlesbrough succumbed to a 9-0 home defeat to Sheffield United, whilst Manchester United claimed a 6-0 win at Burnley. Everton beat Durham 2-1, Huddersfield Town beat Derby County 3-2, our stadium tenants Tottenham Hotspur won 3-2 at Reading after extra time, and former WSL side Oxford United lost 2-1 at home to Charlton Athletic. Arsenal netted 10 times without reply against Gillingham, whilst fourth tier Southampton won 2-1 away at south coast rivals Championship side Lewes, making them the lowest ranked side to make it into the fifth round, Brighton and Hove Albion were victorious over Bristol City, winning 1-0, whilst Blackburn Rovers won 5-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Details of the final tie played, our 3-0 loss at Crystal Palace, can be found elsewhere in this programme. The draw for the football tournament at the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo this summer has been made this week. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales will be represented by one Team GB side, rather than four individual sides, and will only be competing in the women’s side of the competition, and not the men’s. The draw will see GB take on hosts Japan, as well as Canada and Chile in group E. Meanwhile, group F has pitted together China, Brazil, Zambia and the Netherlands, group G Sweden, USA, Australia and New Zealand. The winners and runners up of all three groups will qualify for the quarter finals, alongside two out of the three third place sides. UEFA’s head of women’s football Nadine Kessler has said that the idea od a Women’s European Super League would be “devastating” for the women’s game. Last weekend the announcement of a new competition set to feature some of the continents’ top men’s teams was released, but this plan had also included a women’s version too, which was a much lesser reported aspect by the media. The plans were largely discarded later in the week, when several clubs announced their pulling out of the competition due to backlash from fans. This week has also seen Olympique Lyonnais Feminin’s dominance of the Champions League stage come to an end. The French outfit have held the trophy for the past five years, having won each edition of the competition since 2016, however their dreams of a sixth were crushed at the hands of rivals Paris Saint Germain. Having been 1-0 in the first leg, the reigning champions fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Paris, despite having been a goal up early in the match, resulting in PSG winning 2-2 on away goals.
