Leah O’Connor finished second overall to help lead the Spartans, who entered the meet rated sixth in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll. Defending champion Michigan placed second, with U­M’s Erin Finn winning the individual title. The Michigan men finished second to Indiana and the MSU men were seventh. Hockey:Mackenzie MacEachern scored two goals as host Michigan State beat American International, 4­0. Will Yanakeff made 26 saves in the shutout. Greg Wolfe and Joe Cox also scored for the Spartans. MSU (3­3) beat the Yellow Jackets (1­3), 5­4, Friday night. Men’s basketball:Travis Bader scored 21 points and Corey Petros added 20 to lead Oakland University past Lake Superior State, 88­61, in an exhibition game in Rochester. The Lakers’ Derek Billing led all scorers with 26 points. After a closely fought first half, 38­31, the Golden Grizzlies outscored the Lakers 50­30 in the final 20 minutes to win by 27 points, matching their largest lead of the game. Oakland opens its regular season Friday at No. 11 North Carolina. Women’s basketball: Michigan State turned up the defense in beating Grand Valley State, 91­47, in an exhibition game at East Lansing. Becca Mills scored 18 points for the Spartans and Aerial Powers added 17. MSU shot 53.5% (36­for­67), while holding the Lakers to 30.9% (17­for­55). Women’s soccer: Host Ferris State blanked Lake Erie, 2­0, in the regular­season finale. Rachel McCollum made 12 saves for the Bulldogs (9­7­1, 7­4­1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Casey Shauman and Nichole Boehnke scored for FSU. Ferris State earned a berth in the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play at Ohio Dominican on Tuesday. ... Host Western Michigan won a Mid­American Conference tournament quarterfinal game with a 3­2 victory over Kent State. The game ended 1­1 after overtime and went into the penalty­kick phase. Backup goalkeeper Kaitlyn Collin was inserted into the game for the penalty kicks and made two saves. Aubrey Sudomier, Liz Abro and Diana Dedvukaj connected on their kicks for the Broncos. The Broncos will play top­ seeded Eastern Michigan in a semifinal Friday. ... Michigan Tech secured the No. 2 seed in the GLIAC tournament with a 3­1 win over host Walsh. Annie Dahlquist had a goal for the Huskies (12­4­1, 9­2­1). Andrew Cahn beat Penn State’s Vim DeAlwis, 6­4, 4­6, 1­0 (7­5) in No. 1 singles. The doubles pairing of Matt Hamilton and Marc Shideler beat the Nittany Lions’ Thomas Spratt and Zach Lessen, 8­5. The Broncos resume action in January with the beginning of the dual­match season. Boxing: Light middleweight Tony Harrison (15­0) will fight Bronco McKart (55­10) on Nov. 27 at Masonic Temple in Detroit. The bout will air on Xfinity 900 at a later date. Athletics: The Eastern Michigan University E­Club Alumni Chapter, a group of former EMU varsity athletic letterwinners, will induct seven members into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2013 includes: DennisBetts (men’s swimming), EarlBoykins (men’s basketball), JoyAnn Clarke (women’s track and field), WondellaDevers (women’s basketball), Derrick Dial (men’s basketball), Eugene Smith (administrator) and Donald Stewart (men’s basketball and football).
