Brief Bio of Nelson Mathew Skalbania In 1961 Nelson Skalbania graduated from UBC with a B.Ap.Sc. degree, then received his P.Eng. In 1962 and finally received his Master of Science (Civil Engineering) M.Sc. in1964 at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California (specializing in Seismic engineering). Married to Eleni (the owner/operator of the boutique Wedgewood Hotel in Vancouver), have two daughters and two stepdaughters. Hobbies include: chess (international ranking), athletic (track - 7 marathons, squash, tennis, skiing, basketball, etc.) Member Jericho Tennis Club, Vancouver. Extensive travelling (over 50 countries globally). His initial profession as a very active consulting engineer expanded into an extensive real estate career in parallel with the consulting business. Then into a broad range of other businesses where there was no limit to either the size of business, scope of business, nor global location of business. Summary: A. Consulting - 1964 - 1981 President and major owner of McKenzie Snowball & Skalbania, consulting engineers. Started as one-third owner of 3 man company in 1964 but by 1971 over 100 staff in 4 locations in structural, electrical and mechanical engineering consulting. B. Real Estate: 1967 - present Active in Real Estate primarily in the US and Canada. During 10 year period from 1971 to 1981 volume of over $500 million average each year (over 1,000 transactions). A few highlights: 1. Purchased in 3 consecutive years 3 packages of real estate from Genstar. Last package of real estate of $150 million included hotels, shopping centres, apartments, raw land (from New York to Vancouver). 2. Purchased over a span of 10 years, 31 different Eaton’s properties/stores across Canada from Victoria, B.C. to Moncton, N.B. Larger ones included downtown Vancouver store. (redeveloped, constructed $100M project, downtown Winnipeg catalogue store, redeveloped into $50M retail complex, etc.) 3. Bought and resold “Omni” complex in Atlanta, GA (hotel, 2 office towers, retail for $55M - his cost $150M) - sold to Ted Turner - now his current office. 4. Bought “Circus World” in Orlando, Fla from Mattel Toy Co., sold to Jim Monaghan and Harcourt Brace Johanovich (Sea World owners) 5. Opera Square, San Francisco ($100M project, 3 towers, offices, retail, etc) 6. Watergate Apartments (1,200 suite condo - $40M), Oakland, Ca C. Sports Teams - Period 1977 to 1996 - Owned all or part of 10 different sports teams 1. Calgary Flames (NHL) bought Atlanta Flames and moved to Calgary, 2. Edmonton Oilers (WHA) sold to Peter Pocklington 3. Indianapolis Racers (WHA) signed Wayne Gretzky, as a 17 year old, to a Personal Services Contract. Sold Wayne to Peter Pocklington along with the Oilers, 4. Montreal Alouettes (CFL) signed Vince Ferragamo as quarterback one year after he played in Super Bowl with LA Rams, 5. Vancouver Canadians (triple A Baseball) 6. Vancouver Whitecaps (NASL soccer team), 7. Calgary Boomers (NASL soccer team - moved Memphis Rogues to Calgary) 8. Calgary Wranglers (Junior Hockey) 9. New Westminster Bruins (Junior Hockey) 10. B.C. Lions (CFL Football) D. Other Businesses (the more significant ones listed below out of over 100 businesses) 1. Downey Street Sawmills, Revelstoke, B.C. ($10M) Bought a closed sawmill (union problems) that had lost its timber license. Reopened and secured the timber license and is now the largest employer in the City of Revelstoke. Sold to Gorman Bros. 2. Pacific Western Brewery, Prince George, B.C. ($6M) Reopened a closed brewery and the opening ceremony ribbon was cut by 17 year old Wayne Gretzky as his first job as a professional hockey player. 3. Gallery Royale ($10M), Opened Vancouver’s largest Art Gallery (in old Royal Bank Building) Sold to Ken Heffel, now Heffel Gallery, still Vancouver’s largest. 4. Malibu Grand Prix (51 theme parks acquired from Warner Bros. $30M; owned and operated as vice-chairman with head office Woodland Hills, Ca, 5. Norton Motors Ltd. Purchased this 90 year old company in the UK from the Receiver - sold to L. Aquilini, 6. Zeolite Mira ($10M) purchased this industrial mineral company near Venice, Italy. 7. Solar Energy Ltd. ($10M) Founded this “renewable energy/water R&D company in Los Alamos, NM. Still its largest shareholder 8. PCL Plastics Ltd. - ($20M) plastic bag manufacturing company ($100M sales in 5 plants) 9. Franklin Supply Co. Ltd. ($15M) - oil services company based in Calgary, Alta, sold to Sam Belzberg (over $100M in sales). E. Service Industry / Entertainment 1. Restaurants (7 different ones: Malibu, Beach House, Horse & Carriage Inns, etc.) 2. Hotels: (9 different ones, Rembrandt, Georgia, Devonshire, Wedgewood, etc.) 3. Long Distance Telephone Marketing Co. (AT+E) based in Phoenix, 4. American Warranty Inc. (Seattle based warranty company), 5.
