The estimated population for each DEA is as follows: - Slieve Gullion 26,388 - Newry 28,456 - Crotlieve 25,554 - The Mournes 30,843 - Slieve Croob 20,373 - Downpatrick 22,291 - Rowallane 22,069 AGE PROFILE There are an estimated 39,717 persons aged 0-15 residing within the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Area accounting for 22.6% of the total which is above the NI average. There are an estimated 24,726 persons aged 65+ within the Newry, Mourne and Down area accounting for 14% of the population. The working age population (16-64 years) in Newry, Mourne and Down is estimated to be 111,537 in 2015. However it should be noted that the 40-64 age group has grown far more than the 16-39 age group since 2001. PLAY PARKS Newry, Mourne and Down has numerous play parks spread across the District and has also begun to undertake a new Play Park Strategy for the new super council. OUTDOOR PROVISION Newry, Mourne and Down is abundant with a beautiful natural environment and open spaces with many walking and cycling trails. It has numerous forests, parks, and open space as well as 3 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty RECREATION PROVISION Newry, Mourne and Down has 4 leisure centers based in Downpatrick, Newry, Kilkeel and Newcastle. It also has numerous pitches and parks across the district which are displayed in the following map Provision of Indoor Leisure Newry, Mourne and Down District Council MENTAL HEALTH Mental Health Services and Provision is a very important issue in this district and came up on numerous occassions during the initial community planning engagement consultations ran in February and March. The following map shows the number of persons in our district with a long term emotional, psychological or mental health condition and the spread across the area. CHRONIC ILLNESS In Newry, Mourne and Down there are estimated to be over 10,000 people living with a long term chronic illness and the map below shows the spread of this across the district. We have also mapped the three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB’s) that are spread across our district to show the wealth of natural beauty within our district and also to highlight a potential tourism trail that could be developed through the Strategy going forward. The maps below show the percentage change in Further and Higher Education Enrollments from 2001 to 2015. It shows the significant increase in FE Enrollments by an average of 73% while the increase in HE Enrollments was significantly less at 0.5% during this same period. Obviously this is something that will have to be addressed to ensure that the high skilled jobs that come to the area can be filled by local people with the necessary qualifications Location of Land Zoned for Industrial Development 2015 Area Plan .
