JOURNAL OF TROPICAL BIOLOGY AND CONSERVATION 6 : 85 – 88, 2010 85 A preliminary checklist of beetles from Ginseng Camp, Maliau Basin, Sabah, Malaysia, as assessed through light-trapping Noramly Muslim1, Chey Vun Khen2, Richard Lusi Ansis2 and Nordin Wahid3 1No. 6, Jalan 1/7H, Bandar Baru, Bangi, Selagor, Malaysia. 2Forestry Research Centre, Sepilok, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. 3Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation, Universiti Sabah Malaysia, Locked bag 2073, 88999 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. ABSTRACTT. A total of 61 species of beetles (Makihara, 1999), Sarawak (Fatimah Abang, representing 17 families and 47 genera were 2000 & 2005, personal comm.; Lim,1996, collected from Ginseng Camp, Maliau Basin, Bright, 2000) and Sabah (Mohamedsaid, Sabah using light trapping method. The 1997; Chey, 1996). A detailed entomological Scarabaeidae, Cerambycidae, Lucanidae and collection in Sabah and Sarawak reports Elateridae form 70% of the total collection. about 625,511 processed specimens, which Some of the species collected are new records include the Order Coleoptera (Fatimah Abang, for Maliau Basin. 2000). There was also a detailed study on the distribution of beetles in the tropical rain Keywords: Beetles, light-trapping, Ginseng forest at Belalong in Batu Apoi Forest Reserve, Camp, Maliau Basin. Brunei, carried out by the Royal Geographical Society (Earl of Cranbrook & Edwards, INTRODUCTION 1994). There are very few records of the beetle fauna A checklist of 124 species of galecurine from Maliau Basin even though much has been beetles from Kalimantan has been recorded written about Maliau Basin as an enthralling from the Museum of Zoology, Bogor, Indonesia and mysterious treasure house of nature (Reid, 1997). A study of insect profi le in the (Haselbroek et al., 2004; Maryati Mohamed dipterocarp forest of East Kalimantan yielded et. al.,1998; Marsh, 1989; Phillipps, 2002). On 555 species of longicorn beetles (Makihara, record, 32 species of beetles (three of which 1999). remain unidentifi ed) were documented during the 1998 Maliau expedition (Lantoh, 1989), Forest pest insects in Sabah have been and 29 species of dung beetles were recorded studied, listing a number of beetle fauna during the 1996 Maliau expedition (Davis, which are of economic importance to the 1998). The 1998 collection was made in the timber industry (Chey, 1996). A record of lower montane forest on the southern plateau 325 species of beetles was collected using of Maliau Basin at an elevation of 1000 m Flight Intercept Traps at less degraded and using Flight Intercept Traps (FITs). more degraded logged forests in Tibow (Chey et al., 2002). Leaf-rolling weevil beetles Many beetle records for various parts of and coprophagous dung beetles have been Borneo Island have been documented (Tung recorded at Tabin Wildlife Reserve (Sawada 1983; Stork 1986; Mohamedsaid 2004) - and Maryati Mohamed et al., 1999). A general Kalimantan (Reid, 1997), East Kalimantan collection of beetles from the Crocker Range 86 CHECKLIST OF BEETLES Park (Chung et al. 2004), and similarly a portion of the dipterocarp lowland tropical checklist of 44 species of Passalidae at the rain forest and close to sub-montane tropical same park has been established (Kon et al. rain forest of Maliau Basin. The weather was 2005), of which 26 species are endemic to rather hot and dry. The nights were not dark Borneo. A checklist of Chrysomalids from enough to attract certain beetles to the light. Banggi Island, Kinabalu Park and Tibow has been documented (Mohamedsaid, 1997, 1999 The following beetles were collected and & 2000). Kinabalu Park has been shown to identifi ed. Unidentifi ed species at the genus support a high diversity of galerucine beetles level are kept for further studies. with a record of 163 species. Family Cicindelidae: MATERIALS AND METHODS Cosmodela aurulenta Fabricius, 1801 Night collections were done around the Family Carabidae: Ginseng Camp, 620 m a.s.l., 04˚ 44.810’ N, Mormolyce ? castelnaudi 116˚ 54.978’ E, starting at 6.30 pm till 10.30 Mormolyce phyllodes Hagenbach, 1825 pm, from 27 February to 1 March 2005. A 250-watt mercury vapour light, placed next Family Lucanidae: to a white sheet of cloth (3 m2) hung between Calcodes striatus Doyrotte, 1864 two poles was used to attract beetles. Beetles Cyclommantus canaliculatus Ritsema, attracted to the strong light were collected 1891 using killing bottles containing ethylacetate or Cyclommantus lucifer Boileau, 1905 chloroform, later pinned and oven-dried in a Cyclommantus tarandus Thunberg, 1806 laboratory. They have been labeled, identifi ed, Dorcus sp. 1 classifi ed and kept in the BORNEENSIS Dorcus sp. 2 repository at the Institute for Tropical Biology Dorcus sp. 3 and Conservation (ITBC), Universiti Malaysia Odontolabis castelnaudi Parry,1862 Sabah. Beetles drawn to the light at Ginseng Odontolabis vollenhoveni Parry, 1864 Camp were collected and similarly treated. Family Passalidae: The identifi cation of the beetles is based Aceraius wallacei (Kuwert 1898) on Tung (1983), Prisuth Ek-Amnuay (2002), Leptaulax bicolor (Fabricius 1801) Bro. Amnuay Pinratana & Meas (2003), Didier & Seguy (1952), Tironi (1998) and Mizunuma Family Scarabaeidae: & Nagai (1994). At the same time, the authors Apogonia destructorr Bos made use of the identifi ed specimens at Chalcosoma moellenkampi Kolbe ITBC and Forestry Research Centre (FRC), Copris agnus Sharp? Sandakan, for identifi cation and comparison Copris doriae Harold ? purposes. No attempts were made to do Holotrichia geilenkenseri detailed studies on the genitalia of the beetles Lepidiota stigma Linnaneus ? collected. Oryctes trituberculatus Lansb. ?Trichogomphus sp. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Catharsius molossus Linnaeus, 1758 Anomala sp. 1 Beetle collection was done at two places close Anomala sp. 2 to Ginseng Camp. Both collections can be Anomala sp. 3 considered as understorey, and in the upper Anomala sp. 4 Maladera sp. Zegriades magister Pascoe, 1857 Batocera parryi Hope, 1845 CONCLUSION Batocera rubus Linnaeus, 1758 Euryphagus lundi Fabricius, 1792 Total collection of beetle fauna at the Ginseng Xoanodera striata Gressit et Rondon, 1970 Camp, Maliau Basin was rather poor. Perhaps Aeolesthes sp. it was due to the hot, dry season and to the Diorthus sp. nights not being dark enough for productive collection. One would expect more insects Family Trictenotomidae: and beetles in an area that is known to be Trictenotoma dividi H. Deyrolle undisturbed and away from pollution. Family Curculionidae Only 17 families of beetles were Mecocerus brevipennis Jordan, 1894 collected, many of which are represented Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier, 1790 by single specimens. Only four familes, the Cerambycidae (11 species and two Family Elateridae: unidentifi ed), Elateridae (two species and Calaus lacteus fi ve unidentifi ed), Lucanidae (six species and Oxyropterus audoniwi Cand. three unidentifi ed) and the Scrabaiedae (nine Alaus sp. 1 species and fi ve unidentifi ed) are represented Alaus sp. 2 by fi ve or more species and many specimens Alaus sp. 3 are identifi ed only at the genus level. Nine Lacon sp. families, namely Cicindelidae, Chrysomylidae, Lanelater sp. Endomychidae, Eucnemidae, Erotytilidae, Harpilidae, Lampyridae, Mordellidae and Family Endomychidae: Trictenotomidae are represented by single Endomychus sp. specimens while Carabidae, Curculionidae and Passalidae are represented by two species. Family Erotylidae: The Tenebrionidae is represented by four Encaustes sp. species, three of which are identifi ed at the genus level. Family Chrysomelidae Aulacophora antennata Baly 1886 A total of 61 species of beetles (37 identifi ed to species level and 24 to the genus Family Harpalidae: level) were collected and they represent new Pterostichus sp. records for Ginseng Camp, Maliau Basin. Some of the species are new records for Maliau Family Tenebrionidae Basin as a whole, adding to the checklist Setenis cf. striatipennis Lewis produced by Lantoh (1989) and Davis (1998). Simalura sp. The unidentifi ed species collected during the Nemostera sp. Marseni ? expedition will be reported at a later date. Tarpela sp. 88 CHECKLIST OF BEETLES ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Lantoh, S. 1989. Insects.
