ATHENS GENERAL PROGRAMME November 2015 in Paris Students coming from our ATHENS Partner Institution are welcome for this 8-day ATHENS Session in Paris from November 14th to November 20th, 2015. Each student is expected to devote most of her/his time in Paris to the scientific course she/he has been accepted in, but also to the mandatory social and cultural activities organized within the program. Before you leave home, do not forget to: 1. Make sure you are covered by a personal insurance. Contact your insurance and collect information about what to do and who to call if anything happens while you’re away from home (accidents, losses and/or robbery, illness, etc.) 2. Pack you National Identity Card or Passport, as well as your current Student Card: you’ll have to show these documents frequently during your stay in Paris. 3. Secure 35€ in cash to pay for the European dimension activities, and 5€ more as a participation to the fees of the Friday evening party organized by your fellow students from ParisTech Institutions. To avoid change problems, please bring the exact amount. 4. In case you have requested housing, check the housing information you’ve been sent by email and make sure you’ll be able to pay for the entire stay at your arrival according to your assigned hotel rules. 5. Carefully select the guided tours you wish to participate in among those proposed later in this document, you’ll be asked for it when registering. About housing First of all, please understand that almost 250 students are asking for housing in Paris and how difficult it is for any administration to manage such a large population. If you have requested housing in Paris, a bed will have been booked for you for the length of the November 2015 session in one of the two following residences: CISP (Centre international de séjour de Paris), 17 Boulevard Kellerman, 75013 Paris (2 to 3 students per room) Hôtel Formule 1, 21-23 Avenue de la Porte de Châtillon, 75014 Paris (2 students per room) Please consult your emails, you should receive information about which residence and which type of room you’ve been assigned to, together with the payment conditions. You will not be allowed to change rooms during your stay. About transportation in Paris and its area Students can buy books of 10 metro/bus tickets in any Métro or/and RER station. A ticket is valid for one ride only. A book of 10 tickets for travels inside Paris (zones 1 and 2) costs 14,10 €. A book of 10 tickets from Paris to Noisy-Champs (RER station near ENPC Champs-sur Marne) costs 34,80 €. A book of 10 tickets from Paris to Massy-Palaiseau (RER station where to take the bus leading to ENSTA ParisTech) costs 28,40 €. A weekly travel pass called “Navigo Découverte” can also be bought in certain Métro and/or RER station (see the list here). The price of the pass itself is 5 €. You can then pay a flat rate of 21,25 € for an unlimited number of rides from zone 1 to zone 5 (that is, anywhere between Paris, ENPC champs-sur Marne and ENSTA ParisTech) from Monday to Sunday (it hence won’t include whatever ride you’ll want to take the week-end before the scientific courses start). Please refer to SNCF Transilien Route planner to prepare for your rides. Take the RER B at “Cité Universitaire” direction “Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV” and get out at “Luxembourg”. MINES ParisTech is next to the Luxembourg gardens on the Boulevard. For the students housed at Hôtel Formule 1: Walk to the bus n°38 station “Porte d’Orléans”. Take the bus 38 direction “Châtelet” or “Gare du Nord” and get out at “Luxembourg”. MINES ParisTech is across the street, next to the Luxembourg gardens on the Boulevard. 11:00 - Registration When arriving at MINES ParisTech… 60 Boulevard Saint Michel, 75006 Paris RER station “Luxembourg” (line B), bus station “Luxembourg” (line 38) …you will be asked to: 1. Pay for the European dimension fees (please remember to secure 35 € in cash) 2. Register for a visit of the Latin Quarter for the Saturday afternoon and an official visit for the following Sunday 3. Pay for the Friday evening party (please remember to secure 5 € in cash) organized by your fellow students from ParisTech institutions 12:00 – Official Welcome 12:30 – Buffet 14:00 – Departure for a guided tour of the Latin Quarter Professional guides will accompany you around the very famous Latin Quarter where MINES ParisTech is located. You’ll be asked when registering to choose your level: Level 1. This is your first time in Paris Level 2. You know Paris a little Level 3. You already know Paris quite well Sunday, November 15 Official visit in Paris During registration you will select one of the three following visits. Given the number of students involved, please respect the time and meeting place for your group. Each visit last approx. 90 min. Visit of the Marais Quarter – RDV at 10:45 The meeting point is in front of the Hôtel Sully, 62 rue Saint-Antoine, 75004 Paris Métro station “Saint Paul” (line 1) Visit of the Permanent Collection at Centre Georges Pompidou – RDV at 10:15 The meeting point is inside the main entrance to the Centre Georges Pompidou, Place Georges Pompidou, 75004 Paris Métro station “Hôtel de Ville” (lines 1 and 11) or “Châtelet” (lines 1, 4, 7, 11 and 14) Visit of the Montmartre Quarter – RDV at 10:45 The meeting point is at street level in front of the: Métro station “Lamarck Caulaincourt” (line 12) Boat trip down the River Seine A ticket for a boat trip down the river Seine will be offered to you on Saturday, November 14th during registration. You can choose to do this trip when you want, on Sunday after your Official visit or during the week after classes. There is a departure every 45 min from 11:00 to 22:30 every day. The trip lasts about 70 min. The departure quay of the “Bateau Mouche” is located under the Alma Bridge: Pont de l’Alma, 75008 Paris Métro station “Alma Marceau” (line 9) Monday, November 16 to Friday, November 20 Scientific courses A morning reception for visiting ATHENS students is organized in the various hosting ParisTech institutions. Please refer to the RDV Day 1 document to know more about where to go on Monday morning. Friday, November 20 Evening party An evening party is organized by your fellow students from ParisTech institutions. This is the party you will be proposed to buy a ticket for during registration on Saturday, November 14 (5 €). The party is organized at Telecom ParisTech: 53 rue Vergniaud, 75013 Paris Métro station “Glacière” (line 6) or bus station “Vergniaud” (line 62) No event is scheduled on Saturday, November 20.
