Since the Big Sky began playing in the Football Championship Subdivision in 1978, the league has won six national titles - Boise State (1980), Idaho State (1981), Montana State (1984), Montana (1995 & 2001) and Eastern Washington (2010). Big Sky teams have appeared T in the championship game 14 times. In 166 total FCS playoff games, the Big Sky has a record of 90-83 with 10 wins and 10 losses coming against fellow league teams. With the Big Sky’s success in the 2018 playoffs, the league has had at least two teams in the FCS playoffs in 32 of the past 34 years. The Big Sky has had three teams in the playoffs 10 times - 1988, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. In 2013, the Big Sky sent four teams to the playoffs for the first time, followed by another four squads in 2016 and 2018. Since 1993, 17 Big Sky teams have made it to at least the semifinals of the playoffs. The Big Sky has had a pair of squads advance to the quarterfinals five times since 2006 and six times since 2004. In 2018, the league had a record three teams competing in the quarterfinals. Big Sky teams played in three straight national championship games, with Montana advancing in 2008 and 2009, followed by Eastern Washington Walter Payton Awards/STATS Offensive Player of the Year Winners in 2010.
