(Nov. 4, 2000, at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium) Kickoff for the South Dakota Showdown Series contest is set for 2 p.m. at the 2001: South Dakota State 20, South Dakota 3 DakotaDome in Vermillion. (Nov. 14, 2015, at Vermillion) The current SDSU winning streak began with a 20-3 Jackrabbit victory in Vermillion 2016: South Dakota State 28, South Dakota 21 during the 2001 season. After SDSU made the jump to Division I following the 2003 (Nov. 12, 2016, at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium) season, the series was dormant until 2012, when the Coyotes landed in the Missouri 2017: South Dakota State 31, South Dakota 28 Valley Football Conference as part of their own D-I pursuits. Dykhouse Stadium) finale, Nov. 18, 2017. Both teams went on to earn at-large playoff berths in 2017 — for USD it was the first postseason bid in football at the Division I level. In last season’s contest, SDSU raced out to a 28-7 first-quarter lead and ran its way to a 49-27 victory at a wintry Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Pierre Strong, Jr. scored on touchdown runs of 30 and 73 yards in the first quarter and closed out the scoring with a 46-yard scoring run in the closing minutes en route to 253 yards on only 10 carries. Strong’s rushing performance marked the 10th-most yards in a single game by a Jackrabbit running back in program history. SECOND-HALF SURGES: SDSU has a long history of peaking in the second half of the league season since joining the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2008. Over the last 11-plus seasons, the Jackrabbits have compiled a 36-11 record in the second half of the league schedule, running the table with four wins in 2013, 2017 and 2018 en route to Football Championship Subdivision playoff berths. SDSU has posted a 3-1 record in the second half seven other times, with its worst showing a 2-2 mark in 2010. ELITE COMPANY: South Dakota State is one of only two Football Championship Subdivision programs to reach the playoffs each of the last seven seasons, including making back-to-back national semifinal appearances in 2017 and 2018. North Dakota State holds the longest active streak with nine straight trips to the playoffs. 100 FCS WINS: South Dakota State recorded its 100th win as a Football Championship Subdivision program with a 62-30 victory at Missouri State on Oct. 21, 2017. Since moving to the FCS ranks at the start of the 2004 season, the Jackrabbits have posted a 124-70 overall record (.639 winning percentage).
