The Sharon Pratt Kelly papers span from 1951 to 1996, with the bulk of the materials dating from Kelly's time as mayor of the District of Columbia from 1990 to 1995. Among the records are official mayoral correspondence, photos and videocassettes of Kelly at various events, Kelly's personal schedule, speeches, committee files, and mayoral campaign materials. - Page 3 - Guide to the Sharon Pratt Kelly Papers DCAAP.0021 Biographical/Historical note Sharon Pratt Kelly was born in Washington, D.C. to D.C. Superior Court Judge Carlisle Edward Pratt and Mildred "Peggy" (Petticord) Pratt on January 30, 1944. Her mother passed away from breast cancer when Pratt Kelly was just four years old. She attended D.C. public schools, graduating with honors from Roosevelt High School. Pratt Kelly enrolled in Howard University and earned a degree in Political Science. She enrolled in Howard University’s law school, earning her law degree in 1968. In the beginning of her law career, she worked for children’s rights, fought for family rights, and served juveniles in private practice. Kelly eventually became the first African–American woman to be named vice president at PEPCO. In 1977 she was elected as the Democratic National Committeewoman from the District of Columbia, a post she held until 1980. Kelly ran for mayor of D.C. in 1990 following former mayor Marion Barry’s term. Scope and Contents note The Sharon Pratt Kelly papers span from 1951 to 1996, with the bulk of the materials dating from Kelly's time as mayor of the District of Columbia from 1990 to 1995. Among the records are official mayoral correspondence, photos and videocassettes of Kelly at various events, Kelly's personal schedule, speeches, committee files, and mayoral campaign materials. Also included are press releases, mayoral briefings, records concerning District functional departments, and artifacts from Kelly's tenure as mayor, as well as files on youth crime and violence initiatives.
