Tostan and the Sustainable Development Goals

Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program and the Sustainable Development Goals

Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program (CEP) supports communiꢀes in achieving their vision for a brighter future. That vision aligns with the United Naꢀons Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2017 Tostan gathered and analyzed results from its 2013-2016 CEP implemented across 150 communiꢀes. This data is providing an exciꢀng window into the impact that Tostan’s model and community-led efforts are having on a wide range of globally significant issues.

GOVERNANCE

» The proporꢀon of parꢀcipants who now know their human

HEALTH

More than doubled:

Results of Generational Change in 3 Years

rights mulꢀplied by 5 from 13% to 70%.

From 2013 to 2016, Tostan implemented its transformaꢀonal development model, the three-year CEP, in 150 new communiꢀes

in some of the most challenging regions of Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, and Mauritania; countries with a high prevalence of female

genital cuꢁng (FGC) and child marriage. The goal of this fourcountry iniꢀaꢀve, called ‘Generaꢀonal Change in Three Years', was to empower girls and women and significantly expand the movement for posiꢀve social norms change through the abandonment of these harmful tradiꢀonal pracꢀces. It represented the first ꢀme Tostan had invited mulꢀple funding partners to invest in its at-scale, holisꢀc model, to more effecꢀvely spark and measure social norms change.

» % of women who discuss family planning with their husbands » # of respondents whose children receive vaccinaꢀons » % of respondents who used oral rehydraꢀon soluꢀon

“We have a health center here…; now when a child gets sick, we bring him to the health center. The standard way that Tostan now works is through strategic, large-scale implementaꢀon of programs, with mulꢀ-issue monitoring and evaluaꢀon. The organizaꢀon’s long-term vision is that its rigorous internal monitoring and evaluaꢀon system will provide a foundaꢀon for more external evaluaꢀon partnerships that can document and beꢂer understand the full impact of the holisꢀc model across these issues. This would enable further program improvements and also contribute to demonstraꢀng the full potenꢀal of empowering educaꢀon and community-led development.

WOMEN’S CONFIDENCE AS A CRITICAL AXIS OF CHANGE

» Both at home and in public, women’s voices and parꢀcipaꢀon in decision-making helped transform aꢁtudes and beliefs around deeply entrenched social norms.
