STEAM holds many amazing things in just five letters! Each letter stands for a different discipline. These are science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. STEAM is all around you, everywhere you go! This book is one example. Science and technology were combined to create books using computers. Engineers designed and built the machines that printed and compiled the pages and cover. Art fills the book with color and design! And math calculations were used to arrange the words and images on each page. 4 Color & STEAM Explore STEAM using color! Make patterns, create colorful structures, and experiment with hues, matter, and more. STEAM Safety Some projects require the use of heat, sharp tools, or substances that can be unsafe if misused. Follow these rules to explore STEAM safely: • Ask an adult for permission and help before using heat or sharp tools. • Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth during a STEAM project. • Wash your hands after using glues, dyes, and paints. • Read and follow all instructions that come with any product you use. 5 Color Inspection Watch ink dissolve in liquid to create colorful patterns on filter paper. Materials: 6 coffee filters, 3 washable markers in different colors, 6 cups (each around the same size), water, white vinegar 6 Flatten a coffee filter. Using one color 1 of marker, draw a design a couple 1 of inches from the edge of the filter. Repeat with another filter using the same marker. Repeat step 1 with two new filters and 2 a different color marker. Repeat step 1 with the two remaining 3 filters and final marker color. Put about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water in 6 4 three of the cups. Put about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of vinegar in the other three cups. Fold each filter in half three times to 5 make a petal shape with a point at one end. Place one filter of each color point 6 down in a cup of water. Place the remaining filters point down in the cups of vinegar. The colored part of the filters should be above the liquid. STEAM Takeaway Observe the filters over the next few When the liquids reach the marker 7 hours. What happens when water ink on the filters, the ink dissolves reaches the colored designs? What in the liquids. As the liquids happens when vinegar reaches the continue to spread, some of the colored designs? ink travels with them. But different combinations of liquids and inks interact differently. This causes the different color patterns on the filters. 7 Color Chemistry Explore the cool chemical reactions that occur when colors and mediums are combined. Materials: tempera paints, plastic plates, acrylic paints, plastic knife, oil pastels, paintbrushes, water, spoon, watercolor paints, plain paper, construction paper, scissors, glue stick 8 Put blobs of tempera paint on a plastic 2 1 plate. Put blobs of acrylic paint on a Color second plate. Cut small pieces off oil pastels and set them on a third plate. Chemistry Use paintbrushes and a bit of water to 2 mix tempera paint colors. Use different paintbrushes and water to mix acrylic paint colors. Use a spoon to crush and mix together pieces of the oil pastels. Experiment with colors! What color 3 does mixing red and white create? What about red and blue? Blue and yellow? 3 Next, mix mediums! Mix oil pastel 4 pieces into tempera paint. Add streaks of watercolor paint to acrylic paint. What happens? Cut a piece of plain paper so it is 5 smaller than a sheet of construction paper. Use your color creations to paint a unique design on the plain paper. Glue your painting to the center of the 6 6 sheet of construction paper to make a frame. Use any leftover paint to make more 7 works of art! 9 Crayola Colorful STEAM Activities Color is everywhere! You can see it in nature, art, and everyday objects. But color is more than just the way something looks. Cra This book will show you how to use color to explore science, y o l a technology, engineering, arts, and math. You’ll experiment ® Colorfu with how color affects temperature. You’ll grow colorful salt crystals. You’ll build a hologram out of clay.
