Philippa Gregory’s books The Cousins’ War series – great background reading about the War of the Roses and into the reign of Henry VII ❖ The Lady of the Rivers (Jacquetta of Luxembourg) ❖ The White Queen (Elizabeth Woodville) ❖ The Red Queen (About Margaret Beaufort – Henry VII’s mother) ❖ The Kingmaker's Daughter (Isabel and Anne Neville) ❖ The White Princess (Elizabeth of York – marries Henry VII) ❖ The King's Curse (Margaret Pole) The Tudor Court Novels ❖ The Constant Princess (Catherine of Aragon) ❖ The Other Boleyn Girl (Mary and Anne Boleyn) ❖ The Boleyn Inheritance (Jane Boleyn, Anne of Cleves and Katherine Howard) ❖ The Queen's Fool (A young girl's story of her service in the court of Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I) ❖ The Virgin's Lover (Elizabeth I, Robert Dudley and Amy Robsart) ❖ The Other Queen (Mary, Queen of Scots, George Talbot and Bess of Hardwick) CJ Sansom’s books A fantastic murder / mystery historical series set in the reign of King Henry VIII ❖ Dissolution (2003) ❖ Dark Fire (2004) ❖ Sovereign (2006) ❖ Revelation (2008) ❖ Heartstone (2010) ❖ Lamentation (2014) Hilary Mantel’s books These are brilliant books, but they are not as easy to read to as CJ Sansom or Philippa Gregory, they may be books to read when you are half-way through the course – as you will then have more understanding of what is going on and you’ll appreciate the wealth of detail more. ❖ Wolf Hall - the story of Thomas Cromwell, during Henry’s divorce, the fall of Wolsey and the Break with Rome ❖ Bring up the Bodies - takes up Cromwell’s story where Wolf Hall finishes and deals with the fall of Anne Boleyn 1535 – 1536 Suggested Viewing List ❖ Henry VII: The Winter King – a BBC documentary on YouTube ❖ The series – The White Queen (based on Philippa Gregory’s books – this series is excellent background for the course and goes up to Henry VII and his early years on the throne) ❖ The series - The Tudors – Set in the reign of Henry VIII - it’s brilliant! ❖ The series – Wolf Hall – based on Hilary Mantell’s books – this is also brilliant ❖ The series – The Virgin Queen – Elizabeth I ❖ Simon Schama – A History of Britain ‘Burning Convictions’ and ‘The Body of the Queen’ ❖ Elizabeth I – a two part series with Helen Mirram The following films lack historical accuracy – but are good for a feel of the period ❖ The Other Boleyn Girl ❖ Elizabeth I ❖ Elizabeth: the Golden Years .
