His paintings are frequently ll Ponteland s Wa rian’ based on biblical stories, reflecting his religious Had Haydon Newcastle to Carlisle Bridge A69 upbringing. They are set in dramatic landscapes, possibly & M6 upon Tyne Haltwhistle Hexham inspired by the countryside of his youth. Allendale A North Pennines 1 The trail visits many of the places associated with John ( C M Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ) A Martin: East Land Ends Cottage where he was born; the 6 Alston 8 churches where he worshipped, Haydon Old Church and St. Cuthbert’s; Shaftoe School where he was a pupil; Langley Castle, Allen Banks and Staward Gorge. By road John Martin left Haydon Bridge when he was fourteen to A69 from A1 at Newcastle 24 miles. work in Newcastle and he then moved to London.
