CITIZEN SCIENCE TEXT & PHOTOGRAPHS GERRIT LOTZ The sparrow-sized African Pygmy Kingfisher Ispidina picta is, as its name suggests, one of the smallest African king- fishers. It is a mere 12 centimetres in length, and only the forest tiny African Dwarf Kingfisher, which occurs in central and West Africa, is smaller, measuring just 10 centimetres from beak tip to tail.
