Cox was full of praise for the aggressive steer by Gaffalione. “I thought Tyler did a fantastic job of breaking well; she doesn’t always break well,” Cox said. “He kept her in contact with the filly on the lead and not letting her get away. I think it played a big role in us being able to pass that filly in the lane. “I always thought she was a filly who could handle three-quar- ters on the dirt or the mud,” Cox added. “I wouldn’t be opposed to trying her on the dry dirt. She’s not a blazing-fast filly. If you can knuckle down on her, she’ll keep herself in position. She’s really steady and has a lot of try about her and a lot of determination and heart.” The victory marked the second Coronation Cup victory for Cox and Klein Racing, who teamed up to win the 2019 renewal with homebred Break Even. Gaffalione, who secured his first stakes win of the summer meet, said he was intent on leaving the gate quickly. “She has a tendency not to break so well, so I gave her a good warm up,” Gaffalione said. “Brad said to just get her out of the gate and in a good spot. She doesn’t have the biggest turn-of-foot, especially on the dirt, so I just didn’t want to leave too much dis- tance between us. My filly was getting tired and I had to use her to stay in my position but I was just hoping that her class would prevail and it did.” In her first two starts of the year, Goin’ Good finished second in both the Dixie Belle won by Windmill at Oaklawn Park in Feb- ruary and to Tobys Heart in the TVG Limestone Turf Sprint in April at Keeneland. She entered her allowance win from a troubled fifth in the Mamzelle won by Lady Edith in May at Churchill. Bred in Kentucky by her owners, Goin’ Good banked $66,000 in victory while improving her record to four wins and two sec- onds in seven starts. The 4-year-old filly broke alertly, set moderate quarter-mile fractions of :24.31, :47.71 and 1:12.42 for six furlongs and then held off a determined Bramble Bay in what was essentially a stretch-long duel to win Sunday’s $85,000 Jersey Girl Handicap at Monmouth Park. Trained by Rory Huston and ridden by Mychel Sanchez, the daughter of Giant Sur- prise broke through for her first stakes win in her last start on June 27 by winning the Smart N Classy Handicap by three-quarters of a length at Monmouth. This time the margin was just a head, but Groovy Surprise was determined not to give in to the lengthy challenge of Bramble Bay. It was another 11½ lengths back in third to Diamond Play. He ran the testing distance in 2:31.45 on the fast track. A 4-year-old dark bay colt, Tizamagician is trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, who was winning his fourth edition of the marathon. Tizamagician was ridden by Flavien Prat, who was winning his second Cougar II and his third race on the day before adding a fourth victory the 11th race nitecap. Cupid’s Claws, owned by Flawless Racing and Masino Racing Stable, gave the victor a try around the turn and through the stretch, but in the end could not keep up and finished second, five-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Hronis Racing’s Heywoods Beach in third.
