I honestly thought it would just be girls having adventures while camping; and while it is, it also isn't. There is a whole other story going on and it's all bizarre and supernatural. Strange things are afoot and the poor Lumberjanes keep stumbling into weirdness. It's kinda like a female cast of the Goonies meets the Brothers Winchester. They are quirky and fun characters. Their reaction to things and their terminology is so 80's! It's like stepping back into my childhood. I got this because I thought it would be something fun that both my daughter and myself could read and enjoy. Well, this was a really fun read, and I have a feeling my daughter will like it even more than I did! This is the first book in the Lumberjanes series; there are ten books in this series right now. This was a very well done graphic novel that I enjoyed a ton. I loved the fantasy, friendship, adventure and humor in this book. This graphic novel introduces us to a unique group of young women at camp who have a knack for getting into trouble. It's not just any type of trouble either, they continuously run into bizarre creatures and unexpected adventures. They need to discover the mystery of what is going on here! The drawing is colorful, well done, and easy to follow. I enjoyed it a lot. This was a hugely entertaining book that was lots of fun to read and laugh-out loud funny while still having a lot of heart. Overall I loved this first graphic novel and plan on continuing with the series! I would recommend to those who enjoy humorous fantasy set in a contemporary setting. A group of Lumberjanes: v.1: Beware the Kitten Holy quirky girls discover that their summer camp isn't terribly normal. They, however, seem very much up to the challenge. I loved it. The banter among the campers is fast and funny and it's easy to fall in love with all the characters immediately. The reviews for this comic collection have been overwhelmingly positive, and I can see why. The characters are strong, individualized, and intriguing girls, the setting is familiar and spooky at the same time, and the story Lumberjanes: v.1: Beware the Kitten Holy refreshing, both charming and adventurous. Lumberjanes is about five girls who are part of the Lumberjanes organization, a group that is suspiciously similar to the Girl Scouts, with some tongue-in-cheek differences. The story starts in the middle of the action, with the girls out in the woods at night, searching for something suspicious. They are attacked by wolves, not the suspicious thing they were looking for, but certainly eerie Lumberjanes: v.1: Beware the Kitten Holy their third eyes in the middle of their foreheads. After defeating the wolves, the girls try to sneak back into their cabin unnoticed, but their camp counselor is wide awake and furious. Jen drags them to the headmaster's cabin, anticipating some disciplinary action. Instead, Rosie, the camp leader, is intrigued by their description of an old woman who transforms into a bear, and shoos Jen off with an obviously trumped up errand. As the girls tell their story to Rosie, the reader is also filled in on what led to the events in the woods: the girls saw a woman magically transform into a bear, followed her into the woods, and were attacked by three-eyed wolves. Giving the girls some cryptic advice, Rosie sends them back to their cabins Lumberjanes: v.1: Beware the Kitten Holy any punishment. She does remind them to pick up their "up all night" badge from her in the morning. Progressing from this opening chapter, the story continues to blend the nostalgic and familiar scenes of summer camp and friendships with supernatural adventures that are exciting and not too scary. A strong dose of humor runs through everything, from the simpler scenes of girls bonding over their boating activity, to the more unusual events of battling yetis Lumberjanes: v.1: Beware the Kitten Holy brain-washed boy campers. Best of all, the story centers on five amazing characters, who are each fully realized with their own unique personalities. Jo, Mal, April, Molly, and Ripley are not female stereotypes, but formidable and intelligent girls. Along with a great story, the art in this graphic collection is just wonderful. It's bright, whimsical, and attractive. The creators of the series express as much in gestures and facial expressions as they do in words. Of course, the comic book format is based on this marriage of picture and text, but I think this series does it exceptionally well. Also delightful are the pages that are supposed to be excerpts from the Lumberjane manual. They start each chapter off with a page that describes a particular badge, and then we get to read how the girls achieve that badge in their next adventure, in a way quite unlike what the guide suggests. The whole world is fully realized here. I am super excited that I found this series, and eagerly look forward to the next collection. This is weird and quirky and I'm fairly certain there were a bunch of jokes that just went over my head, but by the end I had become a big fan of these ersatz Girl Scouts and their bizarre adventures. This book contains the first four issues of the comic. Here at Walmart. Your email address will never be sold or distributed to a third party for any reason.
