It makes me happy. My name is Mick Wikilyiri. This exhibition was my idea. I am an old man Tjilpie. As a young man I worked on the cattle stations, riding the horses. It was great work, hard work, but those were happy times. I know all about the white man’s world, how the white man thinks. These days I am still working, I am in the Art Centre every day painting and teaching young fellas. My mind takes me back to the old days, and my mind moves to country as I am painting. It makes me happy. I may be a Tjilpie, but I know my law, I am strong in my law and I work everyday, in the Art Centre, in my community, and country to make sure that Law is held, and kept strong, this is the most important thing that I think about. I think this is the most important thing to all Tjilpies like me. Tjukurpa, Ngura, Waltja. Culture, Country, Family. THE KEN FAMILY TREE BY TJUNGKARA KEN So my grandmother on my Mum’s side her name was Wanga she married a man named Peter. My mother Paniny was their number one child, then there were three son’s Brenten, Kenneth, and Freddy, Paniny’s younger brothers. Paniny and my father Mick met in Ernabella. They had a son Mala first, Me Marinka, Freda, Sandra and Tjungkara was the youngest girl. We lost three brothers. Brenten and Iluwanti also met in Ernabella, they had two daughters Sylvia and Nyanu, and they lost two son’s. Freddy didn’t get married, his family is all of us and his dogs. There are hundreds of other family members, so many grand kids. The one thing about our family is that we hold each other close, and do everything together. We grew up that way, and now we are raising the next generation this way. We are holding onto them tight like a strong hug. We dedicate this exhibition to our family members those who are living and those we sadly lost. We pray for a happy, safe, and fun future for the Ken (and Mick and Pan) Mob, in the cities and in the Bush. Everywhere. Your culture is in your blood, look after each other as you have been taught.
