Because the chamber has split between parties, Vice President Kamala Harris will hold the tie- breaking vote, meaning Democrats will control the chamber for the first time since the 113th Congress (2013-2015). Democrats were able to add four seats into their column by defeating incumbent Senators Martha McSally in Arizona, Corey Gardner in Colorado, and David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler in Georgia. Democrats lost a seat with the defeat of Doug Jones in Alabama, and failed to flip other contested races where Republican incumbents prevailed in Maine, South Carolina, Iowa, Montana, North Carolina, and Alaska. Source: Washington Post Updated 8/4/2021 Senate Leadership Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will remain as the top Democrat in the chamber as the newly installed Majority Leader. Democratic Senate leadership will also remain largely the same, with Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) moving to Vice Chair of Outreach after serving as the Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) in the last election cycle, which has been taken over by Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI). The Senate committees with primary jurisdiction in health issues are the Senate Finance Committee (Medicare, Medicaid, Affordable Care Act) and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee (FDA, NIH, CDC, public health, Affordable Care Act). New leadership on the Finance Committee includes the previous Ranking Member ascending to Chairman, Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) taking over as the lead Republican with the vacancy of Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who was term limited by the Republican’s self-imposed rules. On the HELP Committee, former Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) will now chair the committee, and Richard Burr (R-NC) will serve as the lead Republican on the panel with the retirement of former Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN). *Joint committees are made up of bicameral members. The chairmanship and vice-chairmanship of the committee alternate between the Senate and House each Congress. † Indicates a Senator who will retire at the conclusion of the 117th Congress Committee Democratic Chair Republican Ranking Member Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) John Boozman (D-AR) Appropriations Patrick Leahy (D-VT) Richard Shelby (R-AL)† Armed Services Jack Reed (D-RI) Jim Inhofe (R-OK) Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Sherrod Brown (D-OH) Pat Toomey (R-PA)† Budget Bernie
