DESCRIPTION OF JOB: History Colorado is seeking a Museum Director with experience in engaging audiences who have traditionally been underrepresented by the museum industry. This position serves as the chief administrator of El Pueblo History Museum, a nationally recognized museum in the History Colorado museum network, and a dynamic ambassador and liaison between History Colorado and the community and region served by the community museum. Job Duties Community Relations Develops a thorough understanding of the community and surrounding region in which the community museum is located, including: education, community narrative, culture and ethnicity, and heritage tourism by attending local meetings, programs and other events. Nurtures long-standing relationships with community residents and organizations that expand the museum's ability to implement History Colorado's mission in the museum's respective part of Colorado. Develops energetic new community partnerships that expand the museum's audience base, create new museum programs, generate new donors, or expand revenue generation. Communicates and represents to the larger History Colorado organization about the needs, stories, people, concerns, opportunities of the museum's respective community through strategy sessions, group planning meetings. Represents the mission and ideals of History Colorado to the community, including serving as local media spokesperson on behalf of History Colorado. Creates a strong community connection to the community museum through events, programs, education, exhibits, meetings, and rentals. Seeks strategic ways to utilize the resources and expertise of History Colorado within the community. Collaborates with the philanthropy officer for Community Museums and Philanthropy Division to identify and develop relationships with donor prospects, participate in proposal development, and manage restricted and unrestricted gifts. Fosters and maintains high-level of knowledge and understanding around the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, history, and museum work, including experience and/or familiarity with anti-oppression, de-colonization and de-centering practices. Planning and Administration Serves as the chief administrator of the museum and collaborates with different divisions within History Colorado to accomplish the museum's goals, programs, facility maintenance, collection needs, and finances. Collaborates with the Director of Community Museums and within the Community Museum team and History Colorado in long-term planning for the community museum through weekly team meetings, biannual team retreats, and ongoing formal and informal support and encouragement of team members. https://agency.governmentjobs.com/colorado/job_bulletin.cfm?JobID=2526149 2/4 8/1/2019 Job Bulletin Maintains and monitors community museum budget to meet or exceed the museum's strategic goals. Grows community museum revenue through innovation, fiscal prowess, and/or the expansion of programs, community connections, and access. Develops growth-oriented outcomes, implementation strategies, budgets and metrics to measure achievement in: revenue generation, mission delivery, quality, and/or audience connection. Assembles, trains and supervises team of paid and unpaid staff to administer programs and manage the community museum. Prepares and submits monthly progress reports and participates in regularly scheduled meetings with Community Museum Director Team. Museum Management Creates and manages a dynamic museum space and experience that encourages visitation from the community, surrounding region, and tourists. Collaborates with the Director of Community Museums and relevant History Colorado divisions in the planning, development and implementation of exhibitions, educational programs and collections use. Creates and oversees revenue-generating museum education programs – in collaboration with Education Coordinator for Community Museums and site-specific museum Education Coordinator – at the community museum that attracts school audiences, young people, and adult lifelong learners. Collaborates with grounds keeping staff/volunteers and History Colorado Facilities Division to manage a safe and well-kept property. Works with the Facilities Division on planning for capital construction and maintenance projects and ensures all on-site work meets the Secretary of State Standard for Preservation as a National Register or National Landmark property, as well as other federal or state laws relating to water, wildfire mitigation, fuel containment and risk management. Collaborates with the Collections Division to oversee the use and stewardship of collections materials on the property. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & APPEAL RIGHTS: At least five years experience working in ways that bridge museums/institutions and communities and/or Masters Degree in disciplines related to history, communications, gender studies, ethnic studies, museum studies or interdisciplinary humanities is preferred. Specialized training as well as the ability to demonstrate museum best practices in the performance of his or her job is necessary. Must: Have the ability to set goals and prioritize and implement specific tasks to accomplish those goals in a coordinated and cooperative manner according to various plans, procedures, policies, timetables, and budgets. Have excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrable experience in conducting research and synthesizing facts essential for writing grant proposals, new release and interpretive materials; investigating historical periods; initiating or improving programs. Have knowledge of best practices of the museum profession regarding community engagement, interpretation and storytelling, and history-based, student-centered education. Have knowledge and experience with community-centered museum practices that are grounded in the most current inclusion practices.
