Samuel is eleven . He loves tuna. Jackson is seven. He favors sweets. As a mother, it is quite easy for me to explain the limitations put on how much junk food they eat. But, it is inexcusable to tell a child that he may not consume an item from the food chain that is supposed to be good for him . (Sam & Jack) Why? Because there's a poisonous metal, mercury, in the tuna, and too much of it can hurt you. (Sam & Jack) Why? Because some big companies are allowed to put this poison in the water that runs by their plants . (Saar & Jack)Why? Because they are able to convince the people in power that this is okay. (Sam & Jack)Why? Don't Know. Anyone here with inquisitive, hungry children knows how long this could go on. The fact of the matter is, there is NO good reason for polluting our food knowingly and with disregard. There are tough decisions to be made by our PA Legislators. They have made the tough decisions before. At times, in the middle of the Might. This issue appears simple enough. No one is disputing that there is mercury pollution .` The technology is available to reverse this trend with hugely positive results. Now, all we need is the legal requirement to do so. Pennsylvania's founding fathers established a Commonwealth specifically to provide the most protections for its citizenry. Pennsylvanians have a right to expect tougher Mercury Contamination Standards than the federal level provides. We came to ask our legislators to pass DEP's proposed rulemaking to amend Chapter 123 of the PA Code. In the last year: Exelon made 10 donations totaling over $5,000 to PA Politicians or PACs. PECO made 79 donations totaling over $67,000 to PA Politicians or PACs . PP&L made 167 donations totaling over $75,000 to PA Politicians or PACs. (PA Dept of State Campaign Finance Reports attached) I cannot speak as eloquently as my PA forefathers, nor can I contribute thousands of dollars to hundreds of politicians. But, I can raise my children to have expectations of their government. There are two possible outcomes. In twenty years, my sons' children will either be asking for seconds on the tuna, or questioning why people can't eat fish anymore.
