Summary for Challney These series of reports provide a summary of the latest available information on the demographic and socio-economic make-up of the nineteen wards in Luton. It looks at the population structure and provides information on the economic, housing and educational achievement of each ward. What’s new – April 2019: Perceptions survey update (i) Challney’s view of Luton: eight per cent feel the image of Luton has improved over the last year 31 per cent feel positive about the future of this town Residents top rated aspects: 1. Further / higher education (89%) 2. Schools (74%) 3. Health services (68%) November 2018: Housing there are 74,293 households in Luton of which 4,597 (6.2 per cent) are in Challney Challney has 12.6 per cent detached, 51.7 per cent semi-detached, 23.2 per cent terraced and 10.7 per cent purpose built flats (ii) the most common tenure in Challney is households owned with a mortgage with 34 per cent followed closely by household owned outright with 31.3 per cent (iii) Challney has low levels of social rented households with 11.4 per cent. The lowest is in Barnfield with 1.5 per cent and highest in Northwell with 33.8 per cent (iv) the average three bedroom house in Luton in October 2018, cost £280,000 compared to £283,000 in Challney (v) Challney has a high proportion of overcrowding in Luton, with 16.1 per cent (vi) August 2018: Health Challney had higher than Luton average (of 9.1 per cent) levels of low birth weights over a five year period with 9.7 per cent (vii) in the 2011 census, the percentage of people who self-reported bad or very bad health in Challney was 5.3 per cent (as a percentage of the total number of people who responded to this question); the average for Luton was 4.8 per cent (viii) obesity in Challney was lower than Luton’s average for both children and adults (ix) the average life expectancy in Luton for females is 82.4 and male 78.5; in comparison, Challney’s average was lower for both genders with 80.3 and 77.6 respectively (x) Challney had the highest number of deaths recorded for cancer and circulatory disease in Luton (xi) April 2018: Demographics (xii) Challney ward is located in the west of the borough. The population of Challney (based on mid-year estimate 2016) is just over 14,400 accounting for 7 per cent of Luton’s population Challney has a higher proportion of residents aged below 17 in comparison to the rest of Luton. Irish, Welsh) population of Challney consists of 31.5 per cent, compared to 44.6 per cent in Luton The next highest proportion of those living in Challney is Pakistani with 14.4 per cent. The total Asian community in Challney consists of 44% of the total population in that ward Deprivation (xiv) the 2015 indices of multiple deprivation showed that Challney was in the top 20-50 per cent most deprived nationally the percentage of children living in poverty after housing costs in Challney is 25 to 30 per cent Economic activity Challney has a slightly lower proportion of economically active population than the rest of Luton with 72.4 per cent compared to 74.3 per cent in Luton the unemployment rate is also slightly lower too at 10.7 per cent (xv) there is a mix of occupations in Challney with a higher than average level of professional occupations as well as a higher than average plant and machine operatives at the start of 2018, there were 115 people claiming unemployment benefit; a rate of 1.3 per cent - the average rate for Luton is 1.8, which has gone down since 2016 (xvi) Crime (xvii) during 2016 and 2017, there were a high number of burglaries reported in Challney with 137 incidents Challney also reported the third highest level of hate crime between 2016 and 2017 in the same year, there were 429 incidents of ASB and a substantial number of fly tipping incidents reported too Perceptions of Luton (xviii) From wave two of the perceptions survey, it was identified
