Stanford, CA, October 9, 2017—A decade after the 2007 hit, The Story, that launched her career, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile celebrates that breakthrough with Cover Stories, a release of covers by an eye-popping cast that includes Adele, Pearl Jam, Dolly Parton, the Indigo Girls and, in a forward note to the collection, Barack Obama. Stanford Live audiences can expect a few of her seminal songs as well as some holiday tunes when Carlile performs with longtime bandmates Tim and Phil Hanseroth (aka “the Twins”) as part of their Winter Acoustic tour at Stanford’s Memorial Auditorium on December 15. Also, just added to the season are two more shows in Stanford Live’s Cabaret series, which is presented in Bing Concert Hall’s cozy 160-seat underground Studio. On November 29, the Jerusalem- based singer Victoria Hanna, called “the freshest, edgiest, weirdest artist on the Israeli airwaves,” performs new work she is developing at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at UC Berkeley, during her fall residency there. Then on January 20, the Bing Studio will host the U.S. debut tour of Israeli jazz piano virtuoso Uriel Herman and his Quartet, who combine jazz, Middle Eastern influences, and alternative rock for a uniquely captivating sound. In addition, Stanford Live will offer a free screening of the 2015 documentary Song of Lahore on November 8 at the McMurtry Building’s Oshman Hall. Directed by Stanford alums Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Andy Schocken, the film tells the story of a group of musicians called the Sachal Ensemble struggling to survive in the oppression and brutality of modern day Pakistan. The screening is Stanford University, 425 Santa Teresa Street MC 2250, Stanford, CA 94305-2250 ē Tel 650.723.2551 ē live.stanford.edu presented in conjunction with the Sachal Ensemble’s planned performance at Bing Concert Hall on Wednesday, November 15.
