Potomac Chapter The Commander Studebaker Drivers Club Volume 50 Issue 2 February 2018 Studebakers and Facebook Steve White Our computers and the Internet open up so many vistas to us while we are at our desks or almost any stationary spot now. Many of our members enjoy the social interactions possible on Facebook. Those of us who enjoy classic cars can find a number of places on the site to post stories and photos of our Studebakers. There are three that are used by Studebaker aficionados. The first for our chapter is the Potomac Chapter SDC Facebook page. We have fourteen members now and that makes me wonder. Who among us is not taking advantage of this super social media site? We can post photos galore of our cars or anything related to Studebakers. Studebaker Addicts (International) contains some great discussions that we can access so easily. The photos range from rusted out Commanders in somebody’s field to Studebakers that are concours quality. The questions and answers with pictures posted there can be educational at times. Of course, other posts show everything from frustration to enthusiastic praise to condemnation partic- ularly when a poorly modified car is pictured. The last Studebaker Facebook page that I joined is one for Avanti lovers – Avantis Owners Associa- tion. There are so many useful things posted here for those who have original Avantis, Avanti IIs, and their successors. Owners looking for new parts have a place to go for help that usually provides a quick turnaround. My last visit to the Avantis Owners Association Facebook page found some ter- rific photos of Avanti concours winners. In this instance it was the Boca Raton Concours d'Elegance. I hope to see you all there. Thank you, Nadine, for finding what looks like a terrific restaurant to hold our March luncheon and thank you, George, for suggesting that Nadine consider the Mount Airy Tavern. To all member: please let Na- dine know as soon as possible if you are attending and you haven’t contacted her yet. I am hoping to hear from someone willing to help me with the 2018 Orphan Car Tour. The tour will take place on Saturday, June 2, and will start in the Jarrettsville, MD area. It will end at the Friendly Farms restaurant in Upperco, MD. See http://orphancartour.org/Tour_Information.html for more information. One of our local cruise-in groups is having a Frederick County Tour on March 17. Here are some details: Glen's Olney Spring Cruise, 8 AM – 2 PM; start at Oakdale Church, 3425 Emory Church Rd, Olney, MD 20832-2613. The course is all back roads and it will be a leisurely drive through some covered bridges and the destination is a restaurant (I think it will be in Thurmont) for lunch and we head home solo from there. A change in topic - I finally took my GT Hawk out on February 17. Burt started pretty well after being closed up in our garage for two months. It was fun to drive over to a local Olney Saturday morning cruise-in after going there for too long in my GMC. You are not alone if you looked for my GT Hawk in “The Post” and you missed it. It was included for a blink of the eye (maybe two blinks). I went with my two daughters to see it and was able to give them an elbow in the side so they could see it and they did. You’ll see it over on the left side of the attached picture. The taxi is the prominent car in the short sce- ne. I noticed it because the lights reflected fair- ly brightly off the rear grill. I’m hoping to get the DVD when it becomes available so I can pause the movie when the Hawk appears. The Commander is the monthly publication of the Potomac Chapter, Studebaker Drivers Club. Alas, Phil knew that the engine was seized up and he wanted to learn mechanic skills to get it running again. So he checked out his local tech institute for a course, signed up for three months of evening classes and attended diligently, learning all he could. When time for the hands on exam approached, Phil knew he prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the rebuild of the Studebaker 259ci V8 engine with ease and skill. When his final grade for the course came in the mail, he was surprised to find that he had achieved a mark of 150%. Fearing a mistake, Phil called the instructor, saying “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for an out- standing grade, but I wondered if there had been an error.” The instructor proudly said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark. I gave you an extra 50% because you did all of it THROUGH the exhaust…” Studebaker Personality Profile: Raymond Loewy Hemmings Classic Car March 2018 pages 68-71 A very well written article with many photos and Studebaker references. Includes both the facts and myths (e.g. Coke bottle design) about Mr. Raymond Loewy. 33 1962 Indianapolis 500 Pacecars 4 HISTORIAN CORNER by Ed Lemanski LOOKING BACK - Studebaker York PA Swap Meet ended in March, 2017 Fond memories: The 44th and final Studebaker York Swap Meet was hosted by the Keystone Studebaker Drivers Club who sponsored the event. This final event was held March 9,10,11, 2017 at the York Expo Center.York, Pa. Two buildings, as in past years, were the Horticulture Hall and Old Main Buildings. However, Old Main building was dedi- cated just to Studebaker Parts . Plentiful outdoor spaces were for vendors, car corral and Studebaker parking. The Horticulture Hall was home to a Community Craft Show, used book sales, a Chinese auction, the Keystone Raffle Cars and multiple other vehicle displays. and, of course, more Studebaker Parts An extremely successful dinner and social night was held at the Wyndham Gardens. There was a $20.00 pre-paid reservation for the limited seating at the Friday Night "FAREWELL SHINDIG" (their words).
